Promethazine and Hydroxyzine?

Do you know why the anti histamine promethazine is available over the counter (in UK) but the antihistamine hydroxyzine isn’t?

Why is this? What is the difference between the two? Do you know? Thank you!

because a drug is in the same classification as another doesn't mean they are the same, or have the same legal use. penicillin and vancomycin are both antibiotics but they do not kill the same bacteria and do not cure the same diseases.

I am not sure the difference between the two, but it would be good to know. I take hydroxyzine, but it only makes me sleepy, so I take it nighttime. I would like something I can take during the day for the anxiety. Any suggestions????????

Most Anti-anxiety meds are going to make you drowsy to some degree. Ask your doctor about propranolol for anxiety. It's a beta-blocker and can treat the symptoms of anxiety like fast heartbeat, sweating, and shaking.

They are both prescription only in the US. Not sure why promethazine is over the counter in UK.

Promethazine is Rx only in The US. Promethazine is a very heavy drug. It’s administered in different doses for different ailments. All the way from motion sickness to heavy sedation. It’s also highly abused.

I agree, that's why I question it being otc in other countries, but that's their protocol I guess.
