Ohh the misery....

Against_the_current profile image

Ah shit. I wanted to call my aunt to ask for her friend that's a psychologist and she's "im on a pool part". Whenever i need someone they're having fun, parties, weddings, anniversaries. While me and mom are just agonising

I like Nicholson

Except The Shining. That was a mistake. Kubrick entirely missed with that one. What's the famous unquotable diner scene? Hold the pickles hold the lettuce...😆

Steven King hated Kubricks Shining. Spielberg also questioned Kubrick about Nicholson, Kubrick being Stanley, didn’t care what King or Spielberg thought, he treated it as if they hadn’t realized something he already knew. All of kings main characters are male writers from Maine, so of course he took exception to jacks portrayal of Jack Torrence.

What struck me about King's objection to the film is a conversation he described having with Kubrick. Kubrick was an athiest. He was having trouble interpreting the novel, and questioned King thusly:

I don't get it. If we see the spirits of the dead, isn't that comforting? Reassurance there's more than just this life?

King's retort, "What about hell?"

I think the authority on the matter would come from Diane Johnson the co writer of the screen play. she is from almost the same place I am. she’s mentioned kubricks fascination and interpretation of a crazy dad that hates his wife and child to death.

I didn’t find the shining scary really, which was what Kubrick really wanted, I did think Grady freeing Jack from the larder was spooky and so was Danny riding around the halls on his big wheel and those were done in cinematic excellence.

The elevators. Visually stunning. Remarkable filmmaking. No story.

I love the miniseries with Stephen Weber. Less a villain than a wounded man. He does play villains well though. Monk never had a worse bad guy.

Yeah the miniseries was Kings response to the Kubrick work he hated. which is funny to me, because King had to get Kubricks approval and permission to readapt the Shining into a production, he didn’t have the rights to it. Kubrick allowed it under the condition that King, in writing, agree to quit criticizing his film and talking about how much he hated it, with the exception of Kings disapproval of how Jack Torrence was portrayed as insane before arriving at the overlook hotel. King was allowed to continue griping about that one issue.

I think we hijacked against the currents post. I take the blame for that, sorry against the current.

Don't take the blame by yourself. I helped and didn't notice until now.

I loved The Shining actually NBB. I thought Nicholson was brilliant in it. Don't like Shelly Duvell so she kind of spoiled it for me.

Have you read the book?

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply tohypercat54

I have. Before I saw the film, I think the comparison is why I didn't enjoy it. Shelley Duvall doesn't appeal to me either.

What did you think of the miniseries?

Did you read the book too?

Jack Nicholson is one of my favourite actors. Loved him in The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and The Witches of Eastwick. He is so wonderfully manic :)

I agree hypercat, I do love watching him work. Cuckoos nest is fantastic. The passenger is a favorite of mine as well.

Cuckoos nest is amazing. Did you see The Witches of Eastwick? Nicholson at his manic and demonic best.

Yes at first I didn’t understand his decision to be in a movie like that but he’s so good at what he does. I loved it.

Agreed.

As Good As It Gets is my favorite of his. No one else has ever said so, so it may be my imagination, but I swear I hear the music quote "Dulcinea" at the end of the film when Nicholson is outside Helen Hunt's apartment.

My aunt promised to call but she didn't. I don't know when she's at work..or a party, i don't want to be a burden. I'm becoming like mom begrudging, comparing, envy, sorrow. But it's true. I've never been to a wedding in my life. I've never went to the seaside without getting stomach bug. I didn't have a prom. I didn't have college life. I didn't have a college prom. I will graduate again and nobody would even congratulate or even buy me a cake, they would just say "find a job" and i will have to pray they don't kick me out of home
