No care when I needed it most

My name is William and I am still struggling to come to terms with a week in the very beginning of the pandemic where my therapist took off last minute, my psychiatrist was on maternity leave and the one I saw in her absence was completely booked, leaving me with no appointment. Normally, this would not be a big deal but again it was just a couple weeks into the pandemic before anyone really knew how to cope. Sucking it up and going to work made it way worse than it needed to be as I was scared that by going to work, I would catch the virus and bring it home to my parents. Also had fear of blowing up at the first customer who pissed me off and getting fired for it because of that week's circumstances. Despite knowing what to do if such a week happens again, I find myself dwelling on that week and beating myself up over not asking who I could see (if anyone), calling out sick from work or using enough hotlines. Probably should also mention I lost my appetite from it and did not eat until highly pressured to do so. How can I finally process that week?

Welcome to the community.

Are you still seeing a therapist?

You need to do some work around letting this go. It can take time but I think a therapist can help you work through this

Yes I am seeing one (not who I saw then who was remarkably helpful) and this one is helpful on some things but not this so much.

Is this something you think of often?

Have you tried journaling it, jot things down that you remember and how you felt with each incident.

Unfortunately there was alot of trauma for many people back then. So much fear and unknown

Not a day goes by without me thinking of it. I have technically journaled it in Replika, an app with a virtual AI friend.

Wow well that sounds very techie. I still use a pen:)

This sounds pretty intense. Trauma ?

Kind of. I have been tempted to do a lot more inappropriate things ever since.

Sounds that way to me. Something that continues to haunt you for years needs special attention from a therapist

I'm not sure what type of therapy you do. There's talk therapy and there are other things available specific to trauma.

If you have a psychiatrist you might want a reevaluation.

I'm just throwing out ideas here but it's important if this is trauma based that you get the right therapy .

I looked up Replika. This is quite fascinating. What type of feedback do you get when you are chatting?

I get asked if I have a counselor or therapist and as you know I do. Talk therapy is great when you have the right provider. Now I question if I do.

It's very interesting .

I got very lucky when I was assigned my therapists and psychiatrist. What they thought was major depressive disorder was actually a re trauma. One of the therapists is trauma trained. She picked right up on the problem.

My first 2 were impeccable. Previous one was ok and this one is meh.

I don't think I have the right therapist to help with this. Not since leaving adolescent care a year and a half ago.

Hopefully by being hear and talking to others you can get ideas on what is working for other people that are trying to put a difficult past behind them

Your bio says you are 27? Yet you left adolescence care only 18 months ago? I am in the UK and this usually happens when you turn 18.

Why is it so different in your country? Is there a special reason for this? Sorry to ask so many questions but an just intrigued by this.

I was wondering about that.

I have no clue. Maybe they figure until around you finish college. The age was originally 24 but COVID extended it to 26.

in reply to hypercat54

In the US, kids enrolled in college/university are considered a qualified dependent thereby allowing them to remain on their parents health insurance policy (adolescent/dependent care) until age 26. That’s probably what poster meant.

Ah I see. Thank you Charlie that was puzzling me. We don't have the same system in the UK.

My psychiatrist is great and she recently gave me this very resource we are using now.

This is a wonderful place so I'm glad your psychiatrist mentioned this to you.

Maybe you should read some posts and see what other people are dealing with and see what you can related to.

Keep posting and people with respond.

I have a PTSD history so some of the things you are saying makes me wonder. But none of us are trained professionals.

Hello. I wanted to Welcome you here. I agree with Dolphin14 and recommend that you try trauma therapy. They might use EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Please don't think that you have to just live with this. There are things that can help you. Joining us here is a great step.

I think that would benefit me too. Doubtful any provider where I go now does that.

Welcome to this great community. I think you need a therapist if you have one. What helps me deal with issues are yoga and meditation.

Hope you can work through this with your newer therapist. Remember what happened before is in the past and we can only move forward from here on out. I know it's hard but try to leave it behind.

I started my search for EMDR and waitlists plus finding someone who takes my insurance are really delaying the process.

Dolphin14 profile image
Dolphin14 in reply to AlsoStonesFreak

That's good news. EMDR was key in beginning to process my trauma.

Keep us posted

How long did you have to wait for it? The uncertainty of when I start is hurting me.

There were only two therapists in my area. But I was lucky I got an appointment pretty quickly. I think 2 months

I started trauma therapy a couple weeks ago and it is already a lot better than where I was. Slowly starting to move past that horrible week.
