This guy is very smart: youtube.com/watch?v=YS-gJk5...
His concept of the "worry bin" is exactly what I have going on, especially when it comes to house repairs. I've been grappling with a leak above my living room window, and it looks like I'm finally on the path to having it fixed. But my brain has already jumped to looking for new things to fixate on: There's a bulge on the living room wall, is there a leak behind that too? My electricity usage was higher than normal the other day, does that mean my HVAC system is breaking down?
Sometimes I ask myself in exasperation why my life is a string of one thing going wrong after another - why can't I have just a few weeks where everything goes right? But when there are an infinite number of things to possibly worry about, there's always something new to grab from the worry bin. There's never going to come a time when the worry bin is empty.
So I think he's right that what I need to do is shrink the size of the worry bin. Still take the problems as they come up, but focus more of my mental energy on other things in the meantime.
Does anybody else identify with this idea of a worry bin? Anything in particular you've tried that's helped?
