The flaws of modern psychiatry.

I've been through a lot with the mental Healthcare system and I know many others who have suffered from it as well. While there are good and helpful professionals out there, it's genuinely saddening that it's not the norm. It's also unfortunate that it's a worldwide issue, even first world countries have the same issues.

But why is it like that? It feels like the flaws lie within the original foundation of psychiatry as a whole. The mentality of just wanting to keep you alive rather than actually helping you feel better. Their main goal is stopping you from taking your life even if it means keeping you alive as a zombie constantly injected with drugs. I've always compared it to going to a doctor with a sore arm, so he just amputates it. No more pain right? Oh you have bad thoughts? Let's take away your ability to think then :).

This mentality is the whole reason why lobotomies were even considered as helpful procedures for the mentally ill, let alone a groundbreaking discovery worthy of a noble prize. It's simply just easier. Why put in effort to help when they can just take away your dignity and autonomy then just sedate you until you're nothing but an empty shell?

I just felt like ranting this morning. I am however interested whether anyone here feels the same way or if you disagree, what was your positive experience with psychiatric Healthcare?

Honestly I’m thankful for my meds. I agree that you also need to get to the root of the problem as well. Along the way tho having help is helpful. I’ve been around the block enough times to know kinda what degree of medication I want and am open with my psychiatrist that I don’t want to be overly sedated. I’m fortunate and he listens to me 😊 We work together when issues come up 👍🏻

I am extremely blessed to have a very capable and caring psychiatrist. Agreeing with you, sadly this is not the norm at all. My previous psychiatrists had me so doped up all the time. When I got worse, they doped me up even more, to the point that I almost died, and ended up in the hospital many times. in 2010, when I started seeing my current psychiatrist, she was very easy to talk to, because I never felt she was talking to me as though she was "better than me." In short, she is humble, but also has a caring heart. I have been off the anxiety meds for over 6 years now and I feel so much better. I haven't been in the mental hospital the whole 13 years I have been under her care. It is important to be assertive and own your power in an appropriate manner while talking to your doctor. I have learned that sugar will always get you farther with them than vinegar will. My current doctor does not take any insurance at all, so I pay her completely out of pocket. But I just divide it up into a monthly payment, so each appointment is paid for by the time it takes place. I have found it to be worth every penny. The good thing is, if my psychiatrist does me wrong, I can just fire her and hire somebody else who suits me. I literally live on beans, Ramen noodles and oatmeal. I seriously do not have much money at all, but my psychiatrist is one of my greatest financial priorities because it makes a difference knowing I can freely hire or fire my doctor, and to heck with what my insurance says. A doctor can have all the education and training in the world, but if they don't care, they might as well just deliver pizzas. I would suggest that, if you can somehow afford it, be willing to pay out of pocket, and keep looking until you find a doctor who you feel is of genuine help. If you can do this, it will make a big difference.
