Just a chat- I do not conversate too much and not long. With my family too. Not just socially. My husband does the talking for me usually. I have been married for a lot of years too. I wish I could do it. I can't explain well at all. It gets a mixed up and I leave out important details to make sense.

Hi Peaches8, I'm happy you reached out to us tonight. After reading your bio, I understand completely what is must be like for you and your husband and your 31y.o. son. Life doesn't always give us what we thought we would have in future years. Once our children are adults it's pretty impossible to get them to listen to our suggestions and advice. I'm in the same position as you with regards to my daughter who will not seek professional help and yet goes on day after day, year after year miserable and bringing herself down with her own negativity.

I've learned that when I get too stressed out, I must take care of me by walking away and finding peace by meditation and breathing. You and your husband may need to find a therapist you can talk with to address these on going issues. This is a time of your life that you both should be enjoying what you worked so hard for. My best to you. :) xx

Peaches I hear you. I also took a look at your profile and wanted to share that my brothers (26 and 23) both still live at home with my parents and have no plans to move out. My one brother smokes weed all day and drinks. He is also depressed and unwilling to get help. My dad says they barely talk to each other anymore and he is fed up. I share this just so you know you aren’t alone - it’s really hard to see someone you love suffering but unable or unwilling to get help. At some point you have to let go and focus on your own mental well being. Sending you strength and solidarity.

Thanks. I needed to hear that. No one understands you when you try to explain it to them either. My son also drinks all day. Do they have a job? My son is between one now.

Yes, they both jump from job to job at various restaurants so it’s a crap shoot whether they are working. They tried college but gave up - I think the draw of drinking/smoking/partying was too strong. Plus the pandemic turned everything upside down. My dad said he feels guilty which is why he lets them stay home. It’s a really difficult position for parents to be in!

You may be suffering from low-self-worth which could be impacting your speaking confidence. As a kid I was punished and shamed for being proud of myself or showing any signs of trying to stand up for myself and combined with being bullied in school I developed social anxiety. So you might benefit from healing that part of you if you think this fits you. There are a lot of good books as well as good info on youtube about it.

I had 3 brothers and 1 sister. My brothers stuck together all the time. They did everything together . My sister left when I was 12 years old. Had no one to hang out with. I did not like where I lived. So I did not go out too much. My Father would hit my brothers if they were

bad. I was never bad. I did not get hit at all.

I hope you take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself and putting your needs first is not selfish but is necessary in order to be really be able to help others. A lot of us were taught that it was selfish but that is not true.
