I'm down today.

Hi guys. I'm so freakin depressed today and I don't even know why. I sit and think, what is making me feel this way? I have no clue but, I guess that's what depression does. I'm in my bedroom, in the dark, with the TV on, isolating from everyone including my wife. She's understanding thank goodness. Anyone have any advice on how to at least try to start digging myself out of this hole? Thanks guys,Swilly

Hi! I can relate so much. I’m in my bedroom on my phone. I’m glad to have my cat with me at least. But it’s lonely. I think about other people enjoying their summer and I think there must be something wrong with me. Some advice I can think of- reading your favorite book or an uplifting book can help. I’m reading a book and it gets me to stop thinking about my life for a minute because I can lose myself in the plot of the book. Other than that messaging people on here or other support group sites can help with finding connections. Feel free to chat with me on here.

Thank you so much Dani! That's exactly how I feel. Like I feel like I'm missing out on stuff but idc at the same time. I have my cat with me too 😺 Thanks for your reply👍

I can relate as well! Currently, it is the middle of the night here, the cats are sleeping in my bed next to my wife, and I am lying on the sofa, looking at the ceiling. My mind was sad all day long, and now it feels empty. Dani0431 mentioned "other people enjoying their summer". It seems I have a seasonal worsening of my depression each year for that exact reason.

As warmer weather approaches, other people are increasingly involved in recreational, social, and romantic activities—all kinds of things we are excluded from.

Reading fiction books doesn't help a lot since, nowadays, I can't focus enough to lose myself in the plot—the same thing for movies or TV. Currently, the TV is on, mainly because it makes me feel less lonely. But I must choose the show carefully, as I can easily be perturbed or even shocked by violence (fictional or real), stupidity, or vulgarity.

What works for me these times is to focus on manual DIY work. Woodworking. Metalworking. I am usually not satisfied with the outcome, but at least, as long as I am working, I stop ruminating about myself. Of course, this isn't helpful at that time of the night. It explains why I spend some time with you here on HealthUnlocked.

It's nice isn't it Sylvain- to have a place to come 24/7 where the light is

always on and someone is always here to listen. You just described a

virtual Norman Rockwell painting of your wife serenely sleeping in bed

with the cats sleeping next to her. I'm sorry you can't be a part of that

painting right now. Depression robs us of our peace of mind and the

blessings all around us. May you find the calm you are looking for and

so need. Goodnight dear friend. :) xx

”all kinds of things we are excluded from” — why are we excluded? What is stopping you from doing those things?

Question 1: All things related to fun, pleasure, and amusement.Question 2: Me.

Pardon me. I erroneously supposed we have similar difficulties. In my case, there is a part of my mind that prevents me from doing almost any social activity. It is somewhat related to shyness. I discussed that in detail a few days ago:

Same here...

I also think it's seasonal with me too. I love a cloudy, rainy day because then, I have an excuse for staying in and being down.

Btw, thank you for sharing, I don't feel so alone when I read up on here. I share your feelings about literally everything you said. 🫂 ~hugs~ my friend.

Hi swilly79,

" I love a cloudy, rainy day because then, I have an excuse for staying in and being down."

How many times did I hope it rained all weekend, so we had to stay at home? I mean inside the house! Even going into the garden may be painful, especially in the summer when there are laughs, music, and cool people all over the neighborhood.

Your remark also reminds me that, as a teenager/young adult, I liked the rain because people couldn't see when I cried. I suspect I heard that in a song one day—but I can't find the reference right now.

Usually, I'm not too fond of physical contact (I am on the autistic spectrum), but virtual hugs are ok 😉 Thanks a lot! 🙏

in reply to Sylvain-

I totally understand all of that. I wanna be inside non stop. Thank you for sharing this. Virtual hug!

I`ve been isolating in my room for 2 years I just got fed up with a lot of things so resorted to being in the room watching the tv as well.

Yes, I am with a woman-going on 15 years. We like the same TV shows and movies but, sometimes I even isolate from her. 😔 Our baby (our cat) is soothing most of the time lol she's a tortie so she's got attitude😾 Thank you for sharing with me. 👋
