Blood results

Hey guys as some people are aware I was being tested for CA125 due to a cyst on my ovaries. I called my Gp today and asked for the results. The receptionist says the note on her end say “ bloods sent to gynaecologist no further action needed” and I said yes but I would like to know my results and she told me she can not tell me I have to phone the hospital which I did. The hospital said they have no idea why she would tell me this and it’s the Gp that has the results. I was so stressed at this point I called back and thankfully it was a different receptionist. She went and spoke with my dr and told me he said there’s nothing to worry about and the gynaecologist will be in touch regarding my cyst and now I still feel like I don’t have an answer? Have I not to worry about my bloods? Was everything ok? I just want an answer 😭 if something came up in my CA125 test would they tell me? I’m so confused and full of anxiety 😩😩😩😩

It sounds like telling you not to worry means the results were OK. Hopefully you will see your doctor soon for more detailed results, but to me this sounds like good news.

It sounds as if your bloods are ok and the gynaecologist will decide now what to do about your cyst, sounds good to me 👍👍

It's the G.P. who is responsible for telling you the results of blood tests. He or she must at least see them before the patient but you can ask for a copy of the results after that.

Clearly, your GP had no worries about your blood test - it was normal.

What makes you question whether they would tell you if something came up in your blood test? Of course they would. Why are you so suspicious concerning the integrity and competence of your GP?

This is what health anxiety does to us. Our exaggerated concern results in us questioning the medical profession ie. "What if they missed something?"

The CA125 result being negative should be a great relief. The gynecologist will explain about the cyst and what the options are. Everything is going to be o.k., it's just another example of how sensitised nerves cause us to worry unnecessarily. You are not alone in this.

Hi Littlechopsxo,I know it is good news. Most ovarian cysts are not cancer, especially since you are still very young.

I’m not a doctor but I do know if it says blood results sent to gynaecologist and no action is required. That means it is nothing to worry about because that is the pathology report. It would say further action is required, May list what action depending on the cancer. I have worked closely with doctors for a long time.

I hope that helps you be less stressed about the results.

Of course having to deal with that unknown result along with existing anxiety if very difficult. You can message me or who you feel comfortable with on here. There are many great people on this site!

You are entitled to a hard copy of your test results. I think seeing the results will make you feel better. Can you ask for the the office to mail them to you?

This is a very scary situation and anyone in your shoes would be anxious. Don't let people tell you how to feel. Your feelings are yours and I'm glad you are expressing them.

Get those results in your hands and follow up with gyn. Based on the response it sounds like the biggest worry has been ruled out.

You have every right to see the actual results(luckily it sounds like good news). I am fortunate that in my healthcare network my patient portal sends me all results. Usually I see the results of any testing(bloodwork or any other diagnostics) before any of the providers whether I'm in the hospital or as an outpatient. Was just in the hospital a couple days and kept checking emails for all my test results. If you need to, keep pressing them for a hard copy. Glad to hear things are fine!

I think that sometimes there is some misunderstanding of how the medical system works AND, whether through being busy or inattentive, a lack of clear direction/info from doctors and nurses to patients as to what the process will be. This short step would probably reduce their call volume by half.

Generally, it is common practice that the physician that ordered the lab work is the ONLY one that can, ethically and professionally, interpret and discuss that lab’s results with you. This ensures that a non-specialist, such as a GP, without specialized training (in GYN here), is not practicing outside of their skill set and potentially giving you false information whether pos or neg news. The GYN is the best person to interpret a test looking at ovarian cysts.

Does your GYN practice out of the hospital? That may be why the nurse referred you there. If so and the GP did not order the lab work, then the hospital sending you back to the GP was the mistake and should have asked which doctor you were calling for.

Also, it sounds like despite the confusion, they have given you an answer - that the GYN will be contacting you to discuss the results. If it has been several days or a week or more, I’d keep calling daily (unless you have an appointment already established).

I can easily see your GYN quickly looking at the lab results and, seeing that there’s nothing concerning, put it on the back burner so to speak. This is an explanation but not a very good excuse. Doctor’s need to be conscientious about the stress that we all normally go through when waiting for the results of important tests.

My gp requested an ultrasound and after the ultrasound they sent back my ultrasound results to my gp, my gp said there’s likely nothing to worry about as the cyst looks fluid filled as I did say I was anxious about cancer. My gp then requested the blood tests. I called twice for results and the first time was told to phone gyne at hospital who then sent me back to call my gp, the receptionist the second time left me on hold to speak with my Dr she came back and said the sr said there is nothing to worry about and to wait for my gyne letter in the post. I was referred to the gyne BEFORE the blood tests were done. As far as I’m aware the blood test was so the gyne had an up to date record for me. I just feel as though I’ve not had a straight answer from anyone I’ve spoken too and been passed pillar to post
