How do I get myself to eat healthier

Poodlefanforlife profile image

I work from home all week by myself and eat really unhealthy. I eat a lot of fast food. I know it’s affecting my body physically and probably mentally.

I feel like it’s a habit I can’t break on my own right now. I need to start eating healthier. Can’t seem to get myself to do it. Need help. What do I do?

Are you a member of the healthy eating community on HU? People post their ideas and recipes on there and may be able to help. I must admit I don't always eat healthy foods, and it doesn't help that I don' t really like vegetables.

I’ll look into the group. It’s the motivation part I need help with.

Me too. I just can't seem to get myself off the sweet foods. Someone on there may be able to suggest ideas to help you get motivated.I start out with the best intentions, not stocking up on unhealthy stuff , but I don't have much willpower🙄

I personally think I’d eat healthier If I worked with people in person. Id be too embarrassed to get fast food everyday.

When I was working I never went to the canteen as I knew I'd buy the less healthy options. I took my own lunch but that didn't really help. Now I'm retired I really have no excuse, although being on my own most of the day makes me lazy about food.

At my previous job I got told off by colleagues for going to eat at the canteen everyday!

Ok perhaps I could have benefitted from bringing my own lunch to work and losing a few pounds but it wasnt up to them to tell me though!

I find that friend groups influence what I eat!

One day I was out for breakfast with a colleague and I was going to order a big breakfast roll and the colleague ordered a bacon roll so I just had the bacon roll instead.

Yesterday I told myself no to buying more diet coke and also to ordering a take away!

What I decided to do is save the pop for weekends and when I go out from Now on which seems a fair deal!

I have been on a health food journey for a long time. It is definitely incremental. There is a health food group on reddit that is actually pretty informative. When it comes to healthy eating I believe in whole food, not too much, mostly plants. From there you can explore diets that emphasize low carbs or high protein etc but start there. If you want help beyond that I highly recommend a menu service. I used platejoy for years. Platejoy was bought so IDK about quality but there are other versions. If you get a lot of processed food you can probably make up the membership fee in the first month.

If you have some more funds I really liked Noom. There are a couple of competitors. The key point is when they teach you. They don't just have you weigh in and throw a bunch of recipes at you. You actually learn your triggers and how hunger operates. Those two apps work well together.

Finally, no nutrition plan is going to be successful without some sort of movement. You need to do something. A walk is enough. Really... when i hit a plateau I added a 20 min daily walk and lost more weight and could stick to my diet.

I was going to try hello fresh, and might still try it. Hard thing is.. I can find great recipes, get healthy foods at the grocery store and yet still go out to eat or get fast food even though I have healthy food at home. It’s a problem.

I know I’ll feel horrible about it down the road when I start getting health issues.

Hi! Working from home has been awful for so many reasons! I've been able to maintain a healthy diet for the most part and my secret is to only bring foods into the house that are healthy. I will inhale a bag of chips or a pack of cookies or an order of fries ---- so I don't buy them. I make sure the easiest available foods (because I will absolutely eat the easiest available thing) are better for me. Snacks= nuts, fruit, crackers, dark chocolate. Meals by myself are tough to work up the gumption to cook so I have ready made healthier options available: cans of soup, healthier freezer meals, hummus and pita bread. It's not that I never eat less healthy foods, and I have a serious sweet tooth, I just made a deal with myself long ago to make it hard. My kitchen always has the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies, or any number of desserts. But I make myself make the chocolate chip cookies from scratch if I want them that badly. The same goes for french fries, actually, and I bake them in the oven. Potatoes are actually really nutritious if you eat the skin and don't fry them in oil! Another trick you might try, that I recall from when my kids were young, is to cook a lot of food ahead, or at least do the prep ahead, when you are not hungry, or you are preparing for a different meal. You can then freeze portions or refrigerate for later in the week, and that takes away the convenience factor selling point of fast food.
