The only thing we are promised in this life is the moment we are in now..
A second or two from now isn’t guaranteed.. don’t you get that??
Why WASTE time & energy thinking about the past & future when they don’t even exist?
Anxiety is directly correlated to worries about the “future”
Depression is directly correlated with being to caught up in the “past”
You must realize that the only reason your mind is always wrapped up in the past/future is because that voice in your head has no power over you in the present!
Incorporate more mindfulness & stoic philosophy into your lives!
This helps me daily!

One day at a time certainly applies to a lot of situations, but we can’t live entirely that way. What we do today affects what happens tomorrow. In order to live, we have to plan for tomorrow as well as we can. If we don’t pay a bill today, our electricity could be shut off. If we dont save for college, we can’t go to college when the time comes. We set goals for our future. But, hopefully, they are reasonable goals and don’t cause more problems. In the past, for me, it was the “what ifs” that were overwhelming. Unreasonable fear of things that never happened the way I “imagined” they would. In AA we were taught the value of never completely shutting the door on the past. We learn from the past and our mistakes so we are better prepared for them if they arise in the future. Some of our pasts are certainly the enemy and sometimes better forgotten, but always leave the door cracked just a little.
Yes, you are right, Isinatra.💗 I appreciate differing perspectives, it is the fuel for genuine and enlightening conversations, not to mention the chance to look at a situation from another angle. We absolutely do learn from past mistakes and we should absolutely prepare for any future goals.
For me, this discussion about living in the present is meant solely for our mental and emotional health. Ruminating thoughts about the future can cause me a great deal of anxiety. Any time spent in my troubled past only serves up pain and regret, so much so that I have to leave it behind me and not revisit it. I cannot leave the door open even a crack.
Living in this very moment gives me peace. I go about my day being grateful for the small things and when I lay my head down at night I am grateful that I made it through the day. I can close my eyes and not fear the future anymore, it just doesn't matter. Whatever tomorrow brings I will gladly accept it as if I had chosen it. What will be will be, one could say.
Very eloquently said, ella-bee. 🥰 I understand that we all have different needs and ways to protect ourselves from harm. I keep my door open just enough to remember the life I had that caused myself and others harm. I don’t ruminate on it, but I need that reminder so I’ll never go back to that life again.
I admire how you protect yourself, Isinatra. More so, I admire your ability to not ruminate, as it serves no other purpose than to keep us trapped in a never ending cycle of negative thinking. You have strength and I am in the process of finding strength, we are both fortunate to be here at this time in our lives. This forum is a source of comfort for me and for many other members I am sure.
Thanks for the conversation, it helps more than you can know. ❤️
