These questions are necessary to ask because stress and anxiety can affect both adults and children—and children copy the coping skills of their parents. ADAA Member James Cowart, PhD, shares his thoughts and some advice on how parents can help their children cope with unavoidable emotions caused by stress and anxiety.
“Parents need to teach their children that it is necessary to experience these negative feelings since they are a normal part of life. This is a crucial, first step for parents. Parents need to understand that all humans, including their children, will experience some negative emotions,” says Cowart.
