Little fishing village on an estuary

I was feeling a bit down so I drove to this little village a few miles from my home. Many of the houses are clapperboard or wattle and daub with oak beams and are hundreds of years old.

The tide was out and the muddy creek was exposed with just a trickle of water down the middle.

I met two groups of people who stopped to chat, each saying what a beautiful day despite the cold. I stroked a dog or two and we discussed different routes to walk by the river.

The white cottage in the picture is an old farmhouse on a working farm and the other house was just yards from a sand and gravel beach and overlooked the estuary. Both are at least a couple of hundred years old and I got to thinking about all the families who had lived in those houses over the years. It made me think of all the sad and happy times they would have lived through and somehow comforted me.

I suppose it was being able to identify with the people who no longer lived but had been through many of the same experiences and feelings as I despite the different periods in history.

They would have had to cook on wood fires and perhaps collect their water from a well but the love they felt when they looked into their children's eyes would have been the same as I have for my daughter. If their husband was in a fishing boat and the wind was rising they would have had the same fear and dread developing that I got when my partner had to drive back very late at night after a job a hundred miles away when I knew he would be very tired and the fog descending in a thick blanket.

Very best wishes

Kim

Hello, Kkimm! Having trouble getting 2-way communication going with you on here! I'm going to figure out where the glitch is. You are a treasure and I'd enjoy very much chatting with you! I sent a reply to your post about the recent jaunt to the lovely old homes...and also directly to you at your addy as given to me. Can't now locate the previous message from you. Don't give up on me, please. We'll figure this out! Lakebirde

A lovely place. Thinking of the past and the similarities to today made me think as well. My home was newly built when we moved in. That was in 1987. But the land it sits on was once part of a good sized farm. I wonder what wildlife they encountered as I often see deer, turkeys, quail and occasionally a bear or two wanders the neighborhood and the land behind me. I actually know some of their descendants. But I wonder what life was like when this was a family farm. I also wonder what they would think of the families who live here now. We are truly neighbors and watch out for each other. My children grew up in the same kind of place I did. They knew all the other children on the road and would go from one house to another. Together as a group they rode bikes, played manhunt and cut through backyards or walked together to the top of the road. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Thank you for the lovely post and photos. It really got me thinking and brought back happy memories of my childhood and watching my children grow up. A much needed distraction.

Here are some more of my photos of that lovely village. The little cottage with the gate also has an estuary view.
