There are a number of things you can do to position yourself for life and preventing a recurrence of depression:
1. Healthy diet - there is fresh produce that is not expensive. Become a picky shopper and cook your own meals.
2. Exercise - even just a short walk in fresh air will do wonders for your mood and overall health. Up the ante as you feel capable of doing more and reward yourself to make this a pleasant experience.
3. Volunteer - wether you work with humans, animals or the environment, the benefits of meeting people who are selfless has amazing benefits for your mood.
Is unemployment your only trigger?

What you are experiencing sounds quite natural in a way. Loosing your job is a stressful experience to go through. Medication can help a lot, as can therapy, but both take a few weeks to have an effect.
Getting out for exercise (nothing major just a walk or gentle jog) can help.
Speaking to friends and family can be a big help too.
You could also ask your doctor about increasing your dose of medication.
