Thank you. It's been like this for weeks and I just can't take it anymore and really neither can my family. I've tried stretching, ice, heat, none seem to work. I'm going to call my doctor today to see if he can prescribe something to at least take the edge off.
Sometimes i do think if they can break the cycle so body mind and spirit can rest. everything lossens up.Oh my heart goes out to you. I wonder how many of us are on heat or ice, totally had it and just want relief. Mine usually comes and goes but for the last two months it is here.Music is my friend and you tube for meditation.Id love a massage but Im afraid Id break. Hope you get relief soon.
Hi, I feel for you because I have sciatica that fortunately comes and goes. Sciatica that doesn't resolve itself after a few days really needs medical attention. Professional treatment for sciatica includes:
*medication - pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medication
* physiotherapy - remedial massage, prescribed exercises and electrical stimulation of the back muscles
* acupuncture
* traction
*manipulative therapies, such as chiropractic or osteopathy
* epidural injections – medication injected directly into the spine
* chemonucleolysis – Injection of a special enzyme into the disk
*surgery as a last resort.
My go to is a physiotherapist for some hands on treatment and medication. I tried acupuncture too with some good results.
In the meantime, Dr Google provides lots of info about five or so exercises you can do at home to get on top of the problem. The most important thing to remember to push only a little bit through the pain to relieve the pressure. Wishing you good luck as you tackle a pain in the butt. Doing nothing is not an option for your peace of mind and pain relief.
Stretching exercises will help

I can emphasise with you. I am getting on in years now and have suffered from chronic back pain for years, then around 3 months ago I got sciatica as well. I was in constant pain and while painkillers helped a bit it was agony.The worst part for me was going to bed as I couldn't find a position without pain. I would stick my leg everywhere but nothing worked and eventually I would fall asleep from sheer exhaustion. I am aware though that I didn't get it as badly as some though.
Fortunately after about a month it eased off and now it has gone for the time being at least. I don't know your circumstances but what helped me was the painkillers (prescription Co-Codamol), exercise - look online for them. Finally I used the gentle approach. I would walk very slowly to avoid the nerve starting to bite me, then when it eased off a bit increased my pace. I didn't overexert myself but rested when I needed to.
I haven't checked what country you are in but I would advise you to see your doctor for pain relief, then go to physio. It probably is sciatica but there are other things it could be so seeking expert help is always advisable.
My mother used a chiropractor who used massage to ease the nerve out and this did work in the end. It usually does ease off or go without treatment after a while though. My mothers lasted around 4 months and she was bad with it. Good luck.
Thank you hypercat for the info...it is helpful to all.
I am glad this is helpful for you. One of the things which no one told me about is the walking slowly. The pain is worse when you start moving isn't it. I was working on the principle that you have to get your sciatic nerve moving gently at first which hopefully avoids that jingle jangle a bit. Once it is moving slightly then you can go a bit faster as it all helps to free it.
Gentle and frequent exercise is the key. Don't sit down for too long no matter how tempting as it will just stiffen up again. I know how painful it is but it has to be done.
I am sorry Yvonne, because Sciatica is a horrible pain. Like Hypercat I am a good age and have had it on and off for 30years. Because my Baby lay In 'Transverse" position for the whole Pregnancy and on the Sciatic Nerve. I now walk with a Stick, always take a heat pad to bed, and try to move for a short while, then rest for a short while. I find this helps. Yes, definitely see if your Doctor can help.
