Patient satisfaction with antidepressants -- old drugs come out top

Perhaps there are methodology flaws in looking at medication review sites in this way.

Regardless, old medications Phenelzine and Tranylcypromine came out top of the list for patient satisfaction. Also the tricyclic Clomipramine did well.

3 of the top 4 places went to monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Unfortunately, MAOIs can often be some of the hardest antidepressants to get doctors to prescribe.

Never taken Phenelzine. I'm waiting to start Moclobemide.

With the dietary restrictions, take it seriously of course, but you apparently don't trigger a reaction in a lot of cases just because you eat something on the banned list. It may not be as bad an issue as it used to be as it's claimed that tyramine levels are far lower than back in the 1960s because of changes to food production.

As with all antidepressants, not everyone can tolerate Phenelzine. People do e.g. complain about insomnia and weight gain. It can lower blood pressure I think which creates a problem for some people. (As well as spiking it sometimes if you eat the wrong thing, as you already know about.)

You need to check even over-the-counter medications for compatibility.

Some people respond well, but only by going over the maximum, so if you can tolerate the side effects it may be worth pushing the dose up.

Anyway, good luck with it. I wish I could get a prescription to try it but not an easy thing to get prescribed on the NHS. I'm interested in how you find it.
