Appointment with new therapist

I had an appointment with my new therapist, Mr.Cooper and it went well. It was more of "getting to know you" type of session so the real work should start next week with him. I haven't been doing too much socializing lately given the current pandemic, so it felt almost relaxing to hear a cool, male voice on the other line. I just wish I could relax better when talking on the phone. I get so nervous. Does anyone else have this issue? What do you find that helps?

Yes.

I just hate talking on the phone.

Need to be expecting a call and be prepared.

Helps if I prepare myself to listen. And think about what I want to say before hand, write a list of things I want to mention and keep it in front of me.

However, I think it's a bit different with a call with a therapist. Shouldn't be as much pressure ?

He will probably put you at ease just as he would if meeting in person, don't you think?

Adjusting to this new virtual way of communication has been tough on a lot of people and the mental health community has taken a heavy toll considering therapy sessions are now over the phone. The personal human contact or interaction is gone. I’m sure that when you spoke to him you had sooo much you wanted to say because we usually have a lot to say, we’re over thinkers! And that’s ok. Just take the first official session in stride as it’ll still be a getting to know you session. You probably won’t feel comfortable and at ease until your third or fourth session and that’s ok too! Don’t forget to breathe and if there’s particular things you’d like to discuss, I’d suggest starting a journal you can reference back to when you two meet.
