I’m a reclusive and aloof human being, or so I’m told... I’ve grown depressed because of my weight. I’m only 16 and am 230 lbs and I’m desperately trying to lose weight. Every time I try to lie weight and dedicate my self to it something comes along and I lose interest and go back to eating junk all day and night. I need to find positive motivation that’ll help me through my struggle. I tend to have a “give up” kind of negative attitude and am afraid I’ll end up killing myself with my ways.

Hi SCSA,

I know it's hard to lose weight, especially now with shelter in place in effect for so many.

If you don't mind, I'll tell you what helped me lose 40 lbs. (Over a year period)

Just move your body. Try stuff from youtube or move to music you like.

No equipment needed. No gym.

I also let myself eat as many apples and pears I wanted. Sometimes just the act of chewing relieves tension. Do it with something high fiber and low calorie. Its just a substitution.

Also, I try not to bring tempting things into the house very often.

Good luck and keep at it. :)

I found losing weight to be a nice antidepressant!

First things first. If you ever have thoughts of hurting yourself, please call at hotline or 911. There are people who can get you the immediate help you need. It sounds like you beat yourself up a lot, and with weight issues if you are like me I am a stress eater. For me if I feel bad I eat then I hated myself for eating, then I ate because I felt bad. The cycle was horrible. You need to be able to talk about some of the underlying thoughts that are causing you pain. I may know some books that might help you if you are willing to read, but in the meantime you need to look at your mental diet. Mental diet? Yes! Your brain believes what you feed it. Right now you are going through a hard time and you are feeding it negative thoughts. The way the brain work, if you feed yourself the same thoughts over and over again you start to believe them as truth, even when they are not true. So how do we combat that? My suggestion for you is positive affirmation walks. What is a positive affirmation walk? You write down the top 3-5 negative thoughts that you have been thinking. Then on a separate piece of paper You write down the opposite for each on a piece of paper. If your thought is I am weak, on the piece of paper you will write, I am strong. If the bad thought is I don’t know why anyone would love me, on the paper you will write. I deserve to be loved. Continue it for each bad thought. Now take a walk. During your walk look at the piece of paper. Repeat I am strong I am strong I strong I am strong I am strong 10 times, each time you say it try to say it with more conviction, more belief that it is and can be true. Then Go to the next line and repeat. I deserve to be loved. I deserve to be loved I deserve to be loved. Etc. when you get through the list start over again. This time 9 times each, then 8 times each, 7 times each till you are down to repeating your list as a cycle.. I am strong, I deserve to be loved, etc. What does that accomplish? You have now begun to feed your brain positive thoughts, and you just exercised. Exercise also increases dopamine and endorphin levels, which helps boost mood and reduces pain. If you can’t get outside then Do it inside with crunches or jumping jacks. You can feed yourself more positive thought too through positive music, movies, books, etc. Give it a honest try. We are here if and when you need to talk!
