Depression

I was diagnosed with depression in my late teens but didn’t begin medication until my mid 20’s. Therapy has helped but even with both, there are days I struggle.

Sorry to hear of the days that are a struggle. Glad to hear that therapy was of some help to you. If you are not satisfied with your medications, feel free to speak with your GP. Please take care of yourself and know that you are not alone.

I’m in my early 20’s and I’ve had depression for years but therapy didn’t work for me when I went for the first time this past year, and I’ve never tried medication bc the idea of being dependent on something scares me. What made you decide to finally try medication? Bc i’m tired of being depressed but the only new thing I can try is medication but I don’t want to. You don’t have to answer its just your timeline is similar to mine but you’re a little older so I’m just curious.

I’m happy therapy worked for you and I’m wishing you the best❤️❤️

I went through a devastating divorce in my mid 20’s and began therapy. I had a phenomenal therapist who didn’t suggest medication until after a couple months of sessions. Still struggling, I continued to lose weight and sleeping was extremely difficult so at that point, she deemed an antidepressant would be beneficial. I feel certain she also considered the fact depression is common in my family and looking back, I probably should’ve taken medication in my late teens. I’ve been on an antidepressant since and coupled with therapy from time to time, my daily life has improved. As for therapy, I think finding one you connect with is the key. Look around or even ask for recommendations concerning mental health professionals in your area. There are good ones available, but you may have to go through a couple to find what you need. And while medication isn’t a cure, it does has benefits. Depression or any other mental illness is just like diabetes or high blood pressure. We take medication to address those issues and taking care of your mental health is no different. Good luck!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I think I will take your advice and try therapy again once I find a job and my life gets more stable. I was against therapy for a while but I shouldn’t have given up so quickly just because it didn’t work out for me once. Thanks and have a great day❤️❤️
