Anyone Else Feel Worse after Therapy?

I talked with a new counselor yesterday. It went fine. But, my whole day afterwards was difficult.

I had a hard time focusing. I didn’t do much of anything productive (when I got home). At least I went to it and managed to get through class.

Is it not unusual to have a hard time sometimes after therapy?

I always felt bad after therapy. It made me cry there and the rest of the day was emotional. It never even helped. I quit after I tried many counselors for years.

Melhall, what if anything can therapy/counselling do for you;its not supposed to presumably be easy ,its for you to air your feelings ina safe place, perhaps you can enlighten us as to what actually upsets you,is it the aftermath of being alone and the feeling that theres no one there to help pick up the pieces.;hopefully you can try and elaborate.

It upsets me to talk about the details of trauma. I am fine now just living for today and now that I have forgiven the people involved and myself. It was years ago I tried counseling. It certainly helps others.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! In the past, I have felt good after therapy before. I’m sorry it hadn’t helped you. I’m glad you did find a way to keep moving through life and grow, even without that tool since it wasn’t benefitting you.

Thank you. Where there's a will, there's a way. It did take me many years though. I'm 46.

Of course not as bringing up past trauma so you can deal with them can be upsetting. Therapy isn't an easy option but it is very worthwhile if you can persevere x

Thank you for your response. It definitely was... It’s a new person (i saw my old counselor for over 2 years so it was difficult to see a new one). I will keep trying and see how it goes.

Sometimes after discussing problems in Therapy you may feel quite low because your memories have been brought to the surface and if the discussion felt upsetting you will of course feel stressed. Generally we need to relate to our concerns that gives us the chance to come to terms with that negativity. Going to Therapy is supposed to help you put your worries, concerns and upset to rest by learning how to put things right

Thank you. I believe you’re right. I started therapy when I was younger but had a break and now I’m back at it.

I think I don’t like myself whenever I think about the past or what I went through. I know it’s good I’m talking about it; but i don’t like talking about those memories.

I’ll have to make an extra effort to work on my perspective while in therapy or getting out of it... on that I’m putting things right.

This was a new counselor at school and I also have a new therapist (but I cant afford to see my therapist until later).

Yes PastelPink

They do change therapists especially if they feel you are both going around in circles.

The main problem is when the Change a Therapist, they may have different ideas of a treatment approach and when this happens it can push you back as you are trying to get to know and trust this new Health Professional, I feel for any discomfort this is causing you. However you are where you are and you will need to trust the person and move on toot-sweet.

Sometimes having two therapists can cause a conflict of treatment, however we are all different and you know and dictate your needs.

I had a very troubles childhood that has extended through out my life, I made changes and walked away, sad to say they looked and found us. We need to live our own life to the best of our ability. Remember you need to make your own decisions and move on whatever way you feel comfortable.

hi ive experience this before a few times when ive started counselling again.i guess it could be a few things really you've been trapped with thoughts for months with no one to talk to feeling drained or relief could be a combination of them all plus nerves.i usually felt better after an hour or two and have suggested to others in the same position to meet up with a friend family member or just go for a coffee to relax yourself again and gain your composure.

Thank you for replying. It’s nice to hear that others have experienced it as well.

It’s kind of hard getting a rush of all these things that I haven’t talked about back in my head. Things that I don’t want to remember.

I had some coffee and ended up sitting with my sisters and watching TV. Not the best, like I didn’t feel okay enough to do my chores or homework. But it was something.

Yes. No therapist I ever saw knew Claire weekes and thought I was stupid talking about acceptance etc they just wanted me to dig up my past and traumas which led to me being panicky for a week after and absolutely drained. I was pushed to go outside and do multiple exposures and forced to send text messages to friends I'd not seen due to anxiety to arrange coffee, while in the therapy session!!! I did this for 3 years and I the end quit after trying 2 therapists. I gave up. For me therapy has never been helpful, and it's not for everyone so I'm told.

Of course this is just my experience of therapy. Not everyone will experience the same and some find it beneficial.

I think it makes sense that therapy isn’t for everyone. If someone has different ways of working through stuff, where just sitting and talking in a room with a therapist isn’t one of those... it makes sense. It’s really dependent on the patient and the therapist.

I’m sorry your therapists pushed you and it wasn’t an overall healing experience. I’ve have 2 therapists that didn’t help me... the talking didn’t help and listening to them definitely didn’t help. :/ but the one that did (and group therapy) really helped me. I’m thankful for that (she isn’t my therapist anymore she got a promotion).

I met with a new counselor this time. My homework is to journal or write a letter to those who hurt me... journaling doesn’t work well for me so I guess I’ll try the other thing.

Yes, for sure. Sometimes therapists will take you places that are really uncomfortable and stimulates feelings and emotions that are painful. The therapist may challenge you to think about an issue different which is outside the schema we're built. Do not quit - this is the work we have to do to heal. If you feel that you are not a good fit with the therapist ask for someone else. Sending you good karma friend.

Thank you so much for the good vibes!!!

They really do. I’m going to stick with it. I have a counselor at school and a different therapist: they’re both new so I’m trying them out. I’ll try to stay with at least one if it’s overall helpful.

I want to work on my issues.

Oh ya. My anxiety is the worst when I have therapy. I think it’s normal because you’re digging up stuff that’s been stuffed away for years so of course your brain and body are going to be a bit shaken up afterwards.

Thank you! Yeah, I wasn’t ready. In the past, I think I had a good system down where I’d sing my favorite songs or go get my favorite coffee and pat myself on the back.

But instead, I felt drained and didn’t have a pep talk and went straight to class and everything felt too much. My anxiety wouldn’t go down. I’ll have to find ways to be kind to myself afterwards, if that makes sense.

I appreciate your reply!!
