Did anyone else create a persona to live as after domestic violence?

I was in an abusive relationship for 3 years. After, I created this badass princess persona of myself to find a life again. It had worked for over 2 years it seemed until spiralling stresses led me into depression and anxiety to which i was officially diagnosed a week ago. Looking at my personas pictures, my body's skin and hair was better along with better wardrobe choice and makeup. This current me does not look like persona me at all. Like maybe sisters. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I've done this all my life. It's a way of taking control when you have none. It works fairly well in the short term, but at some point you have to acknowledge your true self. I think it takes a strong personality to do this, to survive inspite of your circumstances. Therapist are just starting to recognize this purposeful behavior , and I don't think there is even a name for it. I read an article about it which I will try to locate for you. I'm sure as long as you recognize it there is probably not a problem. It's when you believe your own hype that trouble begins. Keep us posted. Pam

Thank you for your reply. I thought my persona at first was a growth, but more just the idea image of who I want to be. it's been hard finding people in my life who understand and as much as living this way sucks, it feels nice to know I'm not alone.

Oh , you're not alone. You can become what you need to be. In general , I find people become what they think they are supposed to be or what someone else wants them to be. Becoming what you want to be is so much more satisfying . Pam
