Losing friends over political differences

It's so difficult to make friends nowadays because of political differences. It's usually people being petrified of my views and unwilling to accept them that is the biggest problem. Sure things start off nice, but whenever politics gets brought up, 99% of my friendships flatline😔

Well, the thing is....it depends on how strongly you believe in the things you believe in. If you believe strongly, it would be very difficult, maybe impossible, to compromise.

I can handle people who think a little differently from me. But if they think the exact opposite of what I think, that’s a lot harder.

And maybe you live in a place where the majority of people have opposing beliefs to yours. Would it help to move to a place where there are more people like you?

I'll have to go back in time 90 years to get people to think like me....

Let me see, that would be the late 20's. The time between the world wars. Is that right? What appeals to you about that time period ?

in reply to sweetiepye

The ideologies that rose up after communism. You'll get it lol

Are you speaking of ideologies that make sense in an ideal world , but haven't exactly worked out well in reality ? Everything old is new again.

I can't even deal with talking politics. I don't like people to het upset with me ans some will unfriend you just in who you voted for. My mind can't handle it and most who have chosen sides won't budge or listen.. that goes either way. Sorry you lost a friend over this. Some get upset I font want to even talk about it. My mind frame doesn't accept controversy right now and I have to do what's right for me.

Stick to the facts... if that's even possible anymore

We are in a polarized time. Most people are experiencing the same thing you are, if it's any consolation.

Politics is usually an issue on social media. True friends accept each other's views. If politics is important to you, join an action group and make friends with those who share your views. Otherwise, politics should take a backseat, in my opinion, until you've really established a healthy relationship.

NEVER discuss Religion and Politics, make that an agreement. Who's says your is Right or them? You can't force your opinion on others or them on you? Your going to have to agree to disagree. I'm Ready to dump my boyfriend of 18 years because he brings up politics on Purpose, he thinks it's funny. There is Nothing funny about what's going on. If you want to keep your friends??? Zip It

That's my motto. Always has been. No religion or politics. My thoughts I keep to myself.

I totally agree with you. I could not be with someone who believes the total opposite of me or we would be fight all the time. LOL

I have found the best thing to do these days if to stay away from political conversations. I feel very strongly but I usually keep it to myself unless I know the person feels the same way I do. I think the world is full of so much hate these days that we just better keep our beliefs to our selves.

Your just a victim of the current attitude that says you can have any opinion you want if it agrees with mine! These people are really unable to understand the concept of free speech for everyone including those whose political views are opposed to theirs. They are a lost cause I think.

I have had the same issue. I am a lifelong Democrat. We have Republican friends. We have to bite our tongues to hold back. Have lost a few friends. It is sad but I cannot control it.

in reply to KrierandRosie

I'm neither of those lol

We will continue to have free speech as long as we have democracy. Our current leader does not believe in our democratic system. He is a fascist.
