Hi guys I’ve been diagnosed with health anxiety and generalised anxiety disorder. And over the last few months I’ve started believing I’m being poisoned in some shape or form. Mostly it’s stuff like when I’m drinking a can of fizzy pop I wonder who touched what touched our my hands clean am I going to get I’ll from this has a dog licked the cam or has a flu landed on it. Stuff like that and even when I try and ignore it I still very uncomfortable any ideas?

Hi if any of those things happened they wouldn't make you sick as our bodies are far stronger than this. They can cope with lots of germs and they are everywhere anyway.

Unless you are very ill and have low immunity our immune systems will deal with any minor bugs like that. Nothing to worry about. x

I am glad I have helped a bit. Anxiety is a terrible thing isn't it? The main thing is to get a handle on it coz once you have more knowledge you have more self control, and hence less anxiety. x

This, to me, sounds like some form of Mysophobia and maybe even a bit of OCD. There is a treatment for it. I would seek therapy for it, if you're not already. It can be dangerous if it happens often. It does sound scary to me. I am so sorry that you're going through this. Just do know & understand, there are good germs out there. Not everything is bad. Please know that we are here to guide you as well, when if you needed.

Anxiety exaggerates minor concerns into over-riding obsessions. You know very well you're not being poisoned so accept the strange thoughts for the moment. When you stop bombarding your over-sensitised nerves with fear hormones and they revert to normal all the strange thoughts will disperse.

In the meantime just accept them for the moment, no need to fear them as you now know what causes them.

these unwanted paranoid thoughts may be a sign of schizophrenia.

Hi Meyer-gdmnx. Actually, I have similar issues. As with cans, I always wipe the top with a paper napkin. I used to take cans of V-8 vegy juice to work in my lunch bag, and I would always wipe the top of the can with a damp napkin. They were actually quite dirty. It's ok to be "health-minded" with germs and such, however some people take it up a notch or two, that's all. I always use the shopping cart wipes to clean off the handle, got that tip from the news on tv, they did a study and found that they are quite filthy. Same goes for bathroom door knobs and such. I just look at it as being a bit more careful than someone else that maybe doesn't care as much. Really, nothing wrong either way in my opinion.
