Moving while Anxious

Just to introduce myself, I’ve been dealing with anxiety, depression, and ocd for about 10 years now and have tried countless medications. Have recently tapered off Cymbalta and am now on 50mg of Zoloft which seems to be working a bit better.

Things that are hardest for me are big life changes like moving or getting a new job, which I will be doing both of at the end of the month, moving from Seattle to Indianapolis for a new relationship, after living in Seattle my whole life. My partner has been very supportive during the whole process and knows all about my anxiety and depression. Even with good changes I still get anxious and worry a lot and I need constant reassurance from my boyfriend that everything will be ok, luckily he is very patient and supportive. Anyone have any tips with dealing with anxiety during major life changes like this or have gone thru it and can relate?

Thanks in advance!

I totally get you! Fear of the unknown is the biggest trigger for me having Anxiety attacks. As a result, over the years I've become a master researcher. I feel better when I have researched so much that I feel as if I've been there before and know everything there is to know. It is time consuming but it helps me. Maybe you can research a few things or have your partner tell you stories about the neighborhood you are moving too? Journaling helps me too.

Good luck with your future!

I can definitely relate to anxiety with new changes. I know I kind of freak out and think about all the What ifs. I also seek reassurance from my partner who is also very understanding and patient with me. I am glad you have a supportive partner. Even though my partner provides me with reassurance I have come to realize that I must help myself more than anything. His reassurances only provide temporary sigh of relief.

What I have found that helps me: meditation, positive affirmations, and journaling. I am not on any medications so I can’t speak about them. I went to college in Indianapolis. Such a very cool place. I live in Maryland now. I wish you the best of luck with your move and make sure to concentrate on all the good things that happen with moving to a new city and spending more time with your partner.

I have gone thru it and it was really hard. I always wanted to live in the country in a log cabin type home. Moved 2 states away from where my life had taken place for 36 yrs. I didn't live in a busy city, just. a suburban area. Found a brand new home in the country. I felt like an alien from another planet. Nothing was familiar anymore, instead of people there was nothing but pine trees. When I went to the store I saw nobody I knew. I became severely depressed. Took a long time to recover but I did. That's what you need to remember....you will be ok. You have support with someone who loves and cares for you. Soon you'll meet new people and places will become familiar. Hang in there. Hopefully you'll deal much better than I did. I'm sure there's others out there that look at it as a new adventure and are excited and do great. I wish you the best.

I know this was posted a while ago but I wanted to reach out since I'm going through this myself. Moved in April from Florida (where I lived all my life) to NY. It's been really rough for me to adapt and live in a place where I only have my partner and no friends or family. I also suffer from anxiety and depression and have not been taking any meds due to a lack of insurance. All I can suggest is to give yourself time to adjust and know that it will be hard but it will get better. Try not to compare the new situation to your old one because it's easy to do that. I'm still struggling but I do try to remind myself that this would be hard for anyone and that things will get better with time. Best of luck.
