Sleep Aids

So I'm considering talking with my doctor about sleep aids. I've tried melatonin in the past, but I don't think it really works for me. I've tried changing my routine around bedtime, getting more exercise etc. but the reality is that my difficulty falling asleep has to do with my anxiety. Some days I can fall asleep OK, but then I wake up feeling panicked and can't fall back asleep, other nights the anxious thoughts occur as I'm trying to fall asleep. I keep a journal and I've been trying to use that when I can't sleep. I try to get up, walk around, read, etc, but some nights it just seems like an endless fight. A few times I used OTC Zquil but it leaves me feeling really groggy in the morning. I wanted to hear other's experiences with sleep aids, what works for you and what were your main concerns about sleep prior to taking them? Do you take them daily, as needed? How do you feel in the morning?

You might want to try Valerian Root. You can buy it in capsule form on Amazon or get it at supplement stores. Don't be thrown off by the smell. It does work for a lot of people including myself. Hope you can find a solution soon. Good luck...

Many many years ago I got Valerian root tea, but couldn't get past the smell of it. Maybe in capsule form I could handle it. Thanks.

I love chamomile tea, but unfortunately doesn't help when I'm having anxiety/panicky nights.

Hello, I can only explain my experience with sleep aids, I have trouble falling asleep and found some over the counter sleep aids but also discovered that they can affect the memory with long term use, so I couldn't take them anymore. I found that reading before bed-time can help a little, but my favorite is having tea & cookies before bed-time. Now I can only be physically exhausted makes falling asleep easy. I would also encourage you to read a prayer from the bible, there is comfort in Gods love, it might help calm your anxiety. Believe that He will bring you comfort during your night-time stress. May angels watch over you as you sleep, may you feel the Love from GOD that he cares about you. Find something that makes you happy. Hope this is helpful.
