Hot flashes

StereotypicalPisces profile image

Does anyone else ever get hot flashes when they get overwhelmed or anxious? How do you cope with it? I’ve been trying not to take xanax but I live in the south and it’s only getting hotter and hotter and it’s more and more difficult to deal with. It makes me feel sick to my stomach and keeps me in the house when I really want to live my life. I always try to go to the beach every year but this year seems out of the question with how my anxiety and panic attacks have progressed over the past year.

Hi. I know exactly what you mean. Whenever I get anxious I too get hotflashes. So the very first time I got a panic attack it was an extremely hot day, so whenever I get panicked I automatically get hot because my mind remembers that situation and forces my body to heat up. So what I do is firstly I ALWAYS have a water bottle with me that is cold and whenever I get hot I clutch it against my chest to cool down and also drink some water to cool from the inside. Then I have a few steps to calm down. 1, I ask myself what happened to cause my anxiousness and getting to bottom of the cause can help prevent it in the future. 2, Deep breathing. In, hold then out (try breathing out longer than in). 3, Then revert attention to something else. I always have my phone with me and people may think it's because I am anti-social but it is a coping mechanism until I get ahold of the situation. So I go through social media, play games, etc. Lastly the worst thing you can do is run away from that situation, because your brain will automatically save it in its memory as a danger zone. So try to calm down before you leave.

Hello, Yes I get the panicky sweats and I hate them. I do not seem to be able to do anything about them except wait them out. Do some deep breathing for the anxiety. I am also on med's are you? I take Busbar and have Lorazapam for a back up. I promise myself they will not hurt me, even though they feel unpleasant, Do you see a Dr. I talk these "nasty s" out and try to find a way to get them to end. I attempt to keep my anxiety down which helps a little. Sorry that is all I have to help you. I wish you well. Sending calmness & peace. Sprinkle 1. + love.

I take xanax as needed and I haven’t found an antidepressant that’s felt right for me yet but I will try to take in the moment and focus on breathing more instead of allowing myself to freak out. Thanks !

Hi. I live in the South also, and it sucks with the hot flashes! Whenever I go out, I bring a small styrofoam cooler filled with refrigerated water bottles. It also helps to add some of those blue cooler things. Can't stop the temperature changes, but I can feel better once I get back to my vehicle!

That’s really a good idea. My car is pretty old so the air takes a long time to get cool. I appreciate that tip, thanks! :D

I also leave the windows cracked alittle. Hot air rises, so with the windows cracked, it escapes and leaves the vehcle cooler. Several years ago I bought wind deflectors that cover the top of the windows so I don't have to worry about rain. When its hotter, I open them alittle bit more. Bought them at "weathertech". Kinda expensive, but lifetime warranty. Already replaced my rear ones with no hassle!

I too have this issue, my family laughs about it when it happens to me. This actually helps calm my nerves but I still sweat like crazy and feel so gross. I live in western N.Y. and honestly I overheat all year around but I've started layering clothes and purchased some under shirts, pants etc with the wicking or for active/sports people. I don't even excersize but it helps me a lot especially when out in public.
