Psychosis Symptoms

I have MDD and GAD. I’m also fairly certain I have PTSD from being raped 2 years ago. So with those things in mind, I know the symptoms I’m feeling could be tied to any of those. However, reading more about the symptoms of early psychosis, I really identify with them. I’m embarrassed to tell my therapist tomorrow because I don’t want her to think I’m self-diagnosing or googling just to find more problems with myself. But I really do think I’m experiencing things outside of my current diagnosis.

Have you ever had symptoms of psychosis? Does anyone have experience with it?

I haven’t but many diagnoses have similar symptoms. I have a lot of symptoms if not all of heart disease but my heart is good. A doctor once wrote I had personality disorder. I freaked out. Really almost all of these have the same symptoms. Try not to worry! Easier said than done I know all too well. It is your body! If you are concerned you difinitely need to talk to your doctor about it. If nothing else he will understand your anxiety and be able to explain it in a way that will afford you some sort of relief. Either a concrete diagnosis that you can get the appropriate treatment for or explain why you don’t have it to eliminate the stress. I worked in hospital 14 years and rescue squad until I could no longer physically work. Trust me when trying to treat someone the more information you get the better. Unlike physical problems you can see, mental things you need to be told. Suggesting that you read about a diagnosis to assign to all of your symptoms is NEVER a bad thing! If so I’m in trouble! As a healthcare provider though you are just being like 80% at least of the patients they see! Probably way more! Keep a doctor notebook. I write down everything because I get so nervous going to the doctor I often forget things. Questions, concerns, new or changing symptoms. I also keep a detailed Med list along with a detailed medical history (mine is very long) that I take to every appointment I go to! Even doctors I see monthly. Along with my doctor journal. My memory is so bad especially when able. I can’t even remember the worst of symptoms. Never feel bad for discussing your problems with your doctor! They are more than used to it! You deserve to know!

Thank you Shawny! This post gave me the courage to talk to my therapist today.

psychosis

[sahy-koh-sis]

noun, plural psy·cho·ses [-seez] /-siz/. Psychiatry.

a mental disorder characterized by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality.

any severe form of mental disorder, as schizophrenia or paranoia.

Psychosis can describe any number of mental health problems in a severe form. Try not to get so hung up on a set diagnosis. I have manic depression and severe anxiety, ocd and ptsd. Basically I tell people I have mental illness. Most of the diagnosis have very similar symptoms. I’m not sure exactly what my clinical diagnosis is yet. It’s been many years. My meds are pretty stable after many years but I still have some days that are better than others. It’s good to have a diagnosis because some meds have specific purposes but not 100% necessary. There are many different diagnosis in the definition of psychosis. It’s a broad diagnosis. I problem have it because my problems can be so extreme. I am so happy I could help to relieve some of your stress. I hope you got the answers needed from your doctor. That helps my mental illness. I’m at my best when I feel justified. Thank you for helping me.

I’m a bit overwhelmed now from having a challenging night so I couldn’t read through the whole post yet but I want to eventually. Basically years ago, I was hospitalized for about a month because they thought I had psychosis and I was waiting on a program opening up at another facility. I didn’t end up going but they had thought I had schizophrenia at that time and later psychiatrists didn’t agree with that but it was other mental health issues. I recently got back to looking to get more properly diagnosed but psychosis can be a part of different kinds of conditions so it’s not a single thing. Now I don’t disagree with the psychosis diagnosis but I’m not quite sure the whole thing but you can chat with me if you’d like to know more :)

I’d love to hear more about your experience, and how you seeked treatment. My therapist told me that most of the things I’m experiencing are tied to PTSD. But it’s so difficult to explain what’s happening in your head because it’s your reality, so it’s so difficult to parse it all out.

Good grief- that is terrible! I hope they caught the person, and he was convicted.

Okay so my therapist said these symptoms are most likely related to PTSD, so that’s that then

That’s interesting to hear. Sorry it took so long to get back to you on things. A lot going on. I recently worried about dissociation/something similar recently cause of something that happened that brought back past stuff. I haven’t been formally diagnosed with ptsd though. I can see a time that it definitely looked like I had it but I could barely leave the house so I didn’t get proper treatment for it or diagnosed. I’m waiting on the referral I got to a new psychiatrist but at the same hospital. My psychiatrist is going to be leaving the province and this job in March so I’d have to switch anyways but I wanted a second opinion as well.
