So I ruled out breast cancer ,liver issues , colon cancer and now I am scared I am having a heart issue even though echocardiogram looked great . I want to go back to ask for an ekg but my therapist said I have had every part of my body checked enough . I have palpitations and my pulse feels fast but it's not . I get chest pains. I can't control all of this

Hi Jillellen,

You have to get round to trusting your health professionals that you are physically well.

Anxiety disorders are surprisingly common and often go undiagnosed. Their ability to mimic numerous medical conditions (chest pains, fast pulse, palpitations resemble heart problems) adds to the challenge for doctors to make an accurate diagnosis.

Anxiety disorders make up the most common category of psychiatric conditions.

One of the challenges in diagnosing the disorders is that most patients present with physical symptoms rather than psychological complaints. Symptoms such as chest pain, irritable bowel, unexplained dizziness, headache, and chronic fatigue are common, but diagnostic testing reveals no underlying physical cause.

Anxiety disorders often coexist with medical conditions; in some people, anxiety can aggravate and/or contribute to the medical condition, while for others, the medical condition is the underlying cause.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, lists the types of anxiety disorders with its defining characteristics. There are common presenting features, including physical and psychological signs and symptoms . For example, a patient with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) very often presents with intense feelings of dread or worry and an inability to control the worry.

You will benefit by getting some treatment for your anxiety disorders. Your initial conversation with a mental health profession will begin with a consideration of the type of symptoms (emotional, cognitive, or physical) and their nature, severity, intensity, frequency, and duration. Treatment choices will often depend partly on your preference and the experience of the service provider. You can expect to learn about stress management and coping skills to improve your wellbeing
