Magnesium Taurate

I know a few of you take Magnesium Taurate and say it works - where do you get this for a decent price that works? I am in NSR but feel the odd beat/flutter every now & then. My usual Multi Vit/Min contains only 29% magnesium & Ive just been put on Furosemide which I’ve read can deplete magnesium (wondering if that’s why I feel odd beat/fl every now n then?) I’m also on Bisoprolol, Flecainide, Apixaban so as prices on searches of google range from £8 to £50 - any recommendations please TIA x

hi I buy Biocare magnesium taurate from Amazon, it’s £18.69 for 60 capsules, I just take one capsule a day instead of the recommended dose of 2 capsules by Biocare otherwise it would be too expensive for me.

Afibflipper profile image
Afibflipper in reply to JudiHalf

Thank you, have you used it for AF symptoms etc and have you found it beneficial? Are you taking similar medications yourself eg Furosemide Apixaban Bisoprolol Flecainide etc

JudiHalf profile image
JudiHalf in reply to Afibflipper

I take it because I have PAF, it’s hard to say if it helps or not, but think it’s worth trying as it won’t do any harm.

I take Rivaroxoban, Ramipril and Indapamide.

I can’t take any other meds because I get Bradycardia and I’m waiting for a pacemaker.

I hope all goes well for you when you get your pacemaker, thank you for the information 👍

Note that Biocare mag Taurate are very very expensive. They contain 146mg Mag Taurate. Please see my other responses to this discussion.

They have 1574 mg Mag Taurate per dose of 2 and 146 mg magnesium.

I don’t take it, but have thought about it too. I’ll be interested to hear if you find something reasonably priced.

Still at the thinking about stage but will post if I go ahead with it

I got a cheapish one from Amazon, but I wasn’t very sure if it was upsetting my stomach. I moved over a body oil spray containing Magnesium, to avoid taking another pill.

Afibflipper profile image
Afibflipper in reply to Gumbie_Cat

Thank you, I have read one of the side effects is upset stomach - also 4 types of Magnesium. I’m just at the thinking about it stage as I do have to take a lot of medication! Did a spray actually do anything?

Gumbie_Cat profile image
Gumbie_Cat in reply to Afibflipper

I really don’t know. I keep thinking it might ease my joints if nothing else. Since I’m in persistent AFib then probably not 😂

Afibflipper profile image
Afibflipper in reply to Gumbie_Cat

See OzJames reply below, I am NSR just these what prob may be ectopics. Was about to say the CoQ10 was for joints but confused with the Glucosamine! 🙄

Gumbie_Cat profile image
Gumbie_Cat in reply to Afibflipper

I take COQ10 now too. The body oil spray with magnesium claims to ease joints, I suppose it’s like using Epsom salts in a bath. Whether much is absorbed towards heart health, I’m not sure. It doesn’t affect my digestion though, which is the main thing!

OzJames profile image

I take the Cardiovascular Research brand of Magnesium Taurate I take 1 tab late morning then 1 tab 200mg Magnesium Glycinate at night. I also take CoQ10 in the morning and since January I cant feel any ectopics. I also practice nose breathing so maybe a combo of all helps

I take the same brand. 2 throughout the day. At night I might take mag biglycinate. Tried 2 for sleep but they are strong and I have to take a handful of pills to get to sleep. Just switched to diltiazem which is not supposed to cause insomnia. I'll see how it goes. I have been on beta blockers since 2007 and haven't slept well or had one happy day since starting them.

OzJames profile image
OzJames in reply to CoconutBob

interesting, I just checked and mine is biglycinate at night too. I’m on morning and night Metopropol low dose as well and also find the beta blocker sometimes affects sleep. Can you let me know where you buy your taurate from its hard to get sometimes down here

I purchase mine on Amazon.us

I buy MT from here...

ethical-nutrition.com/colle...

Subscribing makes it more reasonably priced.

I use to use Biocare but from the manufacturer I prefer not to buy supplements from Amazon after a bad experience with open seals and reduced content .

Hi,

Please note that Mag taurate from Ethical Nutrition is 10 times more expensive per mg that other reputable brands made in the UK. Its not reasonably priced!

kkatz in reply to Gladstone001

I use Magnesium Taurate from Ethical nutrition.I did my research & found this to have one of the best amount of magnesium per dose at a reasonable price. It has 1720 mg total Magnesium Taurate & elemental magnesium 150 per dose which is 2 capsules.60 caps per pk is Now 17.00 A subscription I believe is discounted so I get 2 packs per 2 months which means no postage charge.I have no stomach problems if eaten with or just after a meal. You collect points and I had an email saying I have earned a £5. Voucher. You can suspend your subscription and alter it online.Very helpful personal service.

I can send a referral link if you wish to give 20% discount but to be honest you can get 15% on your first order without the link.

Whether it helped with my AF I am not sure but I used to have night leg cramps most nights & it helped with that.

The cheapest I tried was from Amazon. It was made in the UK and very reasonably priced indeed. Sadly, it did nothing for me. I tried various magnesium salts, all ineffective. There is plenty of good quality evidence that all magnesium salts and compounds are similarly absorbed and that the taurate formulation is no different from the much cheaper sulphate and similar. I suspect marketing and profit play a role! In fact, eating a balanced diet with vegetables, milk, eggs, nuts and pulses will provides more magnesium than the body can absorb do supplements seem a second best choice to me.

If you are taking a daily PPI drug for reflux problems, such as lansoprazole, it would be worth having a test for magnesium levels as this can, rarely, cause malabsorption and low levels that no amount of supplementation can reverse.

Steve

Afibflipper in reply to Ppiman

oooh good advice re the PPI - didn’t know that and I’m on a supposedly strong one Rabeprazole - I’ll definitely ask fo that as I’m getting bloods done Tues if they’ll add on - Thank you

Ppiman profile image
Ppiman in reply to Afibflipper

It’s only long term PPI usage that might occasionally cause that but worth asking. If your magnesium isn’t low, I can’t see that taking extra will likely do anything as the body can’t absorb than it needs. .

I order from Iherb they sometimes have special offers on larger order with free P&P.

I believe they also offer a new customer discount..20% of with code NEW20

These were recommended by Dr Sanjay Gupta in one of his many videos..

note that these capsules have very little magnesium in them and a lot of potassium. This is not what Gupta was recommending.

Gladstone001 profile image

Gupta recommends Mag taurate (without any other minerals). The Cardiovascular Research Mag Taurate (through iHerb and others) is up to 10 times more expensive per mg that other reputable brands!

Hi,

I have experimented with Magnesium in its many forms for a number of years. Please see:

healthunlocked.com/afassoci...............

Currently I find that Taurate or Glycinate has the same positive effect.

Prices of capsules vary widly. Best price at the moment is Best Immune Mag Taurate 500mg vegan capsules. 100 for approx £10 on Amazon and other sites. Best Immune also produce Mag Glycinate capsules for the same price. I take one 500mg a day (in the evening).

Note that Cardiovascular Research Taurate Capsules are generally very expensive and best avoided.

Gladstone001 profile image
Gladstone001

Sorry for appearing so many times on this discussion. It is clear to me that many folk are buying expensive supplements when much cheaper quality UK made vegan products are available. Please do your research and a little maths before buying. Just because Gupta recommends a product, it does not mean its cheap! Gupta and Ethical Nutrition currently claim that their Mag Taurate is the “…Uk’s stongest..” That is simply NOT TRUE. If strength is measured by mg of elemental magnesium per capsule, then it is one of the weakest! And its not cheap! Note also that Gupta is also likely to take commission on all sales where his voucher code is used. I hope that you find my suggestions useful. I am not promoting any particular brand, I am just suggesting that you look carefully at cost per mg before you buy.

Gladstone001 profile image
Gladstone001 in reply to Gladstone001

Apologies, I have looked again at the various Taurate brands and note that some websites quote mg of mag taurate per capsule, some quote mg of mag taurate per 2 capsules, some quote mg of elemental magnesium and some quote both numbers. So you have to be careful. Ethical Nutrition quotes both mg per 2 capsules and total mg of elemental magnesium. All mag taurate capsules have ~8.9% elemental magnesium and the bioavailability is likely to be the same between brands. Fillers can be different and not all are “vegan”.

So Ethical Nutrition is approx. 0.03 pence per mg of mag taurate and Cardiovascular Research is approx. 0.13 pence per mg of mag taurate (thru iHerb). Biocare is approx. 0.04 pence per mg thru Amazon or direct. Tom Oliver is approx. 0.03 pence thru Amazon and Best Immune is approx. 0.02 thru same site.

Therefore I change my previous conclusion about Ethical Nutrition. It is one of the cheaper brands, but you can buy cheaper. Cardiovascular Research is one of the most expensive, possibly 6 to 8 times more expensive than reputable UK vegan brands.

I have not accounted for P+P and/or buying in bulk, but that is unlikely to change the conclusions.

As other folk have noted here, best to carefully check the ingredients (weight of mag taurate and what sort of fillers) before purchase. You dont have to use Amazon as most of the good UK brands ave their own shopfront websites.

I buy magnesium biglycinate and taurine separately. This way you can control the amount of each and it works out cheaper.

I live in the US & get mine off of Amazon- “Double Wood Magnesium Taurate Supplement for Cardiovascular Health to Boost Magnesium Levels (1,500mg per Serving, 210 Vegan Capsules) Manufactured in USA, by Double Wood Supplements” for $19.95. Been taking for a couple of years & I believe it makes a difference. If nothing else, I sleep better since taking them. Good luck finding a reasonably priced source that you can access.

I was also coming on to say Tom Oliver mag taurate, I buy it from Amazon £9.99 for 60, one a day. Sometimes they have them on 3 for £25.00 so I usually buy them then.

I started taking them for cramp in my feet and calves in the night and also waking in the night and not being able to get back to sleep, I’ve had cramp about twice in the couple of years I’ve been taking them. An amazing almost instant result, sleep is much better too as is anxiety.

I read online that bad cramp in the legs after more exercise than usual was an indicator of low magnesium, my annual blood results show levels as normal now.

I’m on the same drugs as you but just been chucked off apixaban onto edoxoban by text, objections ignored but not noticed any difference yet about a month in.

I do have ectopics if I check on my kardia when feeling lumps and bumps in my chest occasionally, sve and pvcs. If they are particularly bad I’m usually going to go into afib. I don’t know if the magnesium helps as I was in a long period of no afib when I started taking it, but can’t see it that it wouldn’t 🙂

kkatz profile image
kkatz in reply to Visitingcat

If you look at questions on Tom Oliver capsules they will not say how much elemental magnesium is in them.It only tells you total Magnesium Taurate & someone on reviews said they worked out proportion of by the Percentage of elemental mag that you can see on the bottle picture. This is 8.9% which is 50mg.Ethical nutrition is 150 mg for 2 caps & 1720mg magnesium taurate.Do calcs you would need more than twice the amount of Tom Oliver.I don't have shares in Ethical Nutrition but I did my homework.

You need to know the NRV percentage to work out the Elemental mag medium.

I am sure there are others just as good as Ethical Nutrition but do your homework.I spent hours researching Magnesium before buying.

Visitingcat profile image
Visitingcat in reply to kkatz

I found them very good or I would not have commented.

They fixed the issues I bought them for, I no longer wake in the middle of the night jump out of bed and end up stamping my feet on the landing trying to stop the awful cramp pain and then lie there with intrusive thoughts whizzing around in my head for hours and there’s no comments regarding my annual blood tests so they must appear normal.

I’ll listen to the two comments below mine though and will not recommend them any more.

kkatz profile image
kkatz in reply to Visitingcat

I am not criticising you and apologisif it seemed like it .I am not necessarily saying that Tom Oliver is no good, just that they seem to be reluctant to say how much elemental magnesium is available.I should have done a separate answer. And I must admit I was a bit riled by everyone knocking the price of ethical nutrition (not you).I took know the agony of nighttime cramps. Incidentally a bar of soap in the bed worked for me for a few years.

Visitingcat profile image
Visitingcat in reply to kkatz

No probs, I only noticed people discussing how much magnesium is in different brands after I’d been successfully using Tom Oliver for a while so as it’s worked for me I don’t take much notice.

It does seem to matter for others so I won’t comment in future.

I got the impression they are supposed to be ok for vegans though and the packaging is glass with a metal lid.

Afibflipper profile image

I’m not promoting this idea as effective and but I had a friend who drank tonic water for leg cramps as it contained quinine but you must check if it’s ok for you personally if on meds

I get mine direct from Ethical Nutrition, I have research them and am confident they are the real deal.

Be very careful ordering supplements from Amazon, they don't accept any responsibility for anything they sell, in fact they post a disclaimer basically saying buyer beware!

I bought some cheap supplements via Amazon and they looked very suspect, they took forever to dissolve in water, labelling was cheap with little info, a good sign of fakes.

I researched the company. The company was dissolved and the directors (whose names I couldn't pronounce) had resigned. I used Google streetfinder to view the company address and there was no company visible in the area.

This was years ago, they are still selling on Amazon.

Good luck

I did lots of research and settled on Ethical Nutrition. I really bought into the brand, but unfortunately the capsules gave me lots of palpitations, so I stopped taking them (I can be quite sensitive to supplements anyway).

So I did some further research and decided to make my diet more magnesium focused. For instance my breakfast now comprises greek yoghurt mixed with some fruit and pumpkin, sunflower and chia seeds. Tastes super delicious and gives me about 120mg of magnesium from a single meal alone. If you bulk buy the seeds it makes them loads cheaper. Even an afternoon snack of a banana and two squares of 70% dark chocolate provide another 70mg-ish of magnesium. So for me it's about trying to incorporate foods that I really like and have a good amount of magnesium. Plus I regularly use BetterYou magnesium oil, which I also think is really good, although I do find it a bit of a faff!
