1] while Akkermansia is not yet a common probiotic, Bifidobacterium is.
- 2019, Spain:
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (Ba8145) "ingestion decreased waist circumference, waist circumference/height ratio, and Conicity index ...versus its baseline. Changes versus the placebo group reached significance ... after the h-k Ba8145 treatment. Ba8145 decreased the body mass index compared with baseline and placebo group .... Diastolic blood pressure and HOMA index decreased ... Gut microbiome analyses showed an increase in Akkermansia spp. after Ba8145 treatment, particularly in the live form, which was inversely related to weight"
2] Sodium Butyrate and Inulin
- 2017, Iran
"There was a significant increase in A. muciniphila percent change in inulin and butyrate supplemented groups .... Also hs-CRP, MDA and diastolic blood pressure levels decreased significantly in these groups.."
I am a long-term user of low-dose Minocycline (every other night) & double-up on probiotics every morning.
For years I went for the expensive refrigerated brands - latterly, one of the Dr. Perlmutter-formulated "Garden of Life" concoctions. When the pandemic hit, I switched to mail-order brands that did not require refrigeration.
As I wrote in another post: Since I live in Sweden it is very (!) expensive, and difficult, to get a hold on. Yet if there is Akkermansia to get a hold on for my father, I'm willing to try. Thankful for any thoughts!
Trial results look good. But there are lots of tricks that can be played with trials (I'm not implying that they misrepresented their results - I'm only stating the need for healthy skepticism). Thanks for the link. I might try this. Expensive but shouldn't be too hard to test out the results. Do an a1c blood test before starting, take this for a month and test again. Also monitor blood glucose. You could use a Dexcom or another continuous monitor but a day by day fasting BG test should probably suffice.
I don't mind ponying up and testing it and then letting you know what the results were (it would be N of 1 and certainly not conclusive but I think perhaps would give more insight instead of relying on a manufacturer-sponsored study).
CFUs means colony forming units, an assay for how many active probiotic bacteria are in a dose. The higher, up to 100 billion, the more potent. Probably more important initially than for maintenance. FOS is fructose oligosaccharides, short chain soluble fiber similar to inulin, that feed and support the healthy bacteria.
Thank you Patrick. Very thorough as usual. You are right I could not find a commercial product with akkermansia m. But bifidobacterum sp. Yes. Appears that, along with inulin and possibly a little butyrate will support it. I also have foregone the anti inflammatory benefits of doxycycline/ minocyclin in favor of preserving gut microbiome
