Another paper appeared last year [3]. (Sam Denmeade (Johns Hopkins) of BAT fame is a co-author):
"Muscadine Grape Skin Extract (MPX) in Men with Biochemically Recurrent Prostate Cancer: A Randomized, Multicenter, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial."
"... PSADT pre-to-post increase was significant in the 27 (26%) genotyped patients with SOD2 Alanine/Alanine genotype (rs4880 T>C polymorphism) on MPX ..."
Looks like a quarter of us might benefit. Seems like good odds to me.
Most muscadine products are from the seed. A few include skin & seed e.g. [4].
Here is a skin-only product: [5].
The study used a product from "Muscadine Naturals" [6]
"Each 500-mg capsule of MPX contains approximately 1.2 mg of ellagic acid, 9.2 μg of quercetin, and 4.4 μg of trans-resveratrol. The MPX chemical composition and phenolic content are detailed in Supplementary Tables S1.1 and S1.2, respectively."
"Eligible patients identified in physician clinics were randomly assigned 2:2:1 to receive daily doses of eight capsules (4,000 mg daily) of MPX, one capsule (500 mg daily) of MPX plus seven capsules of placebo composed of pulverized rice, or eight capsules of placebo, for up to 12 28-day cycles."
My dad's been taking Resveratrol from Life Extension on the recommendation of his oncologist last 4 years. Should he switch to this grape-seed extract, since it also contains resveratrol, plus the added potential benefit?
Resveratrol was associated with significantly worse survival with LAPC-4 tumors, but unchanged survival with LNCaP. Based on these preliminary data that resveratrol may be harmful, caution should be advised in using resveratrol for patients until further studies can be conducted.
Yes, my dad was a patient of Dr. Myers till his retirement, and he's indeed taking this formulation. Well, potentially adding the muscadine seed/skin won't be difficult. We'll ask his new oncologist during out next meeting about it, to see his response.
I was. Told by an xtandi reseacher at Roswell hosp that grapseed ext. Reduced the potency of xtandi. Don't know about the skin powder. May just best to take in the off cycle. Anyone know about this. Rocco
"We hypothesize that resveratrol may be especially suitable as a lead agent for prostate cancer prevention given its ability to: 1) inhibit each stage of multistage carcinogenesis, 2) scavenge incipient populations of androgen-dependent prostate cancer cells through androgen receptor antagonism, and 3) scavenge incipient populations of androgen-independent prostate cancer cells by short-circuiting the epidermal growth factor-receptor (EGFR)-dependent autocrine loops in the cancer cells." [1]
But does it effectively compete with Xtandi? He might have better info.
Could be important, since Dr. Myers recommended a micronized product from RevGenetics (Nitro250), & I suppose that many take it who might be/become Xtandi users.
