I’ve been on and off ADT for five years. I’ve got this huge beer belly which totally pisses me off! I exercise vigorously 5-6 days a week but have tremendous appetite particularly in the evening. I know what foods to eat but I’m still hungry after dinner. I eat mostly fruit for breakfast, nil for lunch and chicken, fish, salads, sometimes lamb or beef for dinner with veggies.
Has anyone found a way to suppress appetite???

Exercise is only 25% solution when it comes to weight loss or fat loss. Diet is 75% of the solution
Its Simple Math....How many calories go in and how many you burn ….do you have calorie deficit or calorie surplus at end of the day...
One pound of belly fat is equal to 3500 extra calories....you have to exercise all day to burn 3500 calories.....its easier to cut calorie intake to half (1200 calories or so) In 3 days, your 3500 extra calories are gone , taking one pound your belly fat away.
Most people are not aware that they are taking so much more calories in and their body is able to burn only 50-60% of what they are eating...
Nutritious ,low calorie food is the true solution assisted by physical activity many times a day AS for appetite suppressants...thre are some BUT the weight loss caused by use of them will come back right after you stop them...and they do have cardiac side effect risks.
Yes..I believe its true that a drastic change in diet can cause a lot of fat loss.
My weight was 152 lbs when I was diagnosed with pCA..less than 3 months ago..
I was a vegetarian since my birth but I made huge changes in food type..started eating more of watermelons, cantoloupes, tomatoes, peaches, cauliflower, cabbage, lentils, mangoes , apples , pomegranades , moringa leaves, papayas and so on....total calorie intake 1800 and calories coming from fruits and veggies
about 900. ZERO fried food and minimum fatty food. My weight went down to 139 lbs and I got worried about being underweight. But energy level was good and labs were mostly good.
I walk about 4 to 5 miles in 24 hours each day. My weight has stabilized to 140 lbs which is ideal weight for my height of 5'6" I eat a few pieces of almonds and walnuts a day. My only problem is low serum albumin level (2.6) so I have added 4 egg whites in breakfast which will supply (6x4=24 grams ) of Albumin.
My conclusion is that permanent solution to excessive belly fat is to aim for your ideal body weight by alternation in type of food and increasing physical activity.
Thanks. I’ll have to focus more on what and how much I’m eating. I know bad carbs are addictive and cause increased appetite. But I never had this problem before hormone therapy. I think it’s one of the most debilitating and frustrating side effects!!
That's true, Androgen deprivation therapy gets our basal metabolic rate down so we are not able to burn enough carories in resting state.
The brain is "dumb" in a way...when any essential nutritional item is low in body, our "dumb" brain screams "bring food" and we end up eating food. The brain is incapable of telling precisely what nutrient is low..it can not tell us "dude, get me some magnesium..I am low on that."
When we eat highly nutritious food such as veggies and fruits which have all essential vitamins and minerals , the brain does not scream for food all the time..it does not have reason to. That's why nutritious food curtails appetite automatically.
Breaker..all us golfers are fatasses..just ask happy Gilmore. I walk the course every other day...eat a bowl of soup and remain a constant tubby...and I swim a mile here and there not to mention build shit compulsively. I've always been low T so my muscle mass has always suffered. The one thing I've got going for me is I'm strong despite all this...I can still lift eighty pound concrete bags like a young guy without crumpling. We have to forgive ourselves for what natured doled us. I just built Sauna in our old woodshed...does nothing for my lipid overload but wonders for my temperament... Pictures to ensue once I clean the place up a little.
Maybe have a fitness councilor look at your basal metabolic rate and cardiovascular output limits....and of course stay away from the fries.
Well, I went on Lupron and Zytiga at dx in Oct/Nov 2018. I started a therapeutic keto diet similar to what was used for diabetics hoping it slows the cancer down. I do exercise and I try to burn 3000 calories per week at the gym. That has kept my weight down, and I've lost 20 pounds since dx, and my gut is smaller now. Also, I have went to a weekly fast of usually 24 hours, but sometimes 36. Doing all this just for the chance it may help OS. Oh, another thing that helped me is I can no longer drink beer as it causes the urinary track to get messed up.
Well, I don't think the extreme low carb diet had any effect on my urinary track. The cancer came close to stopping urination all together, but went on flomax and that has kept it flowing. I have not had any uti's, but for some reason beer really does a number on my bladder. It's like it goes into another fermentation stage while in there, and urination much more difficult.
Hey Break60 ,I’ve also been on adt almost five years . I lost weight on a strict homeopathic diet ,no sugar .I went from 233 originally to 165 fasting during 8 weeks of RT .. I was gaunt . The problem is that I lost all of my muscle ..not just fat . Now four years later I’m around 195 .. we know that the belly fat is bad for us and heart disease. You’re much better off with out that . If you don’t have any issues that would prevent you from fasting ,then I would start there . Two 500 calorie days per week . Lots of liquids too.The saying eat like a king for breakfast a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner might help you . It is bad to eat then sleep on it . I’m guilty of that too often myself . Good luck losing that unwanted belly . Let me know how you do it please...green tea and gensing might help also ..
Please dont down yourself . When we get hit by the pc hammer everything changes . I am also 6.2 ... I never felt over weight even at 233 I was muscular . Get down under 200 and you’ll feel better . I dropped all sugar and processed food dairy and meat ..that’s a good place to start .. it’s eat to live or live to eat . I like all of the bad foods ,I cheat a little but then get back on tract . Dont eat past 8 pm .. My body is shot also just I’m skinny .. It might take 3-4 months to lose what you want to . Once you do let me know how you did it . It’s not impossible just very difficult ...Good luck Break60 .. live well . Scott
"It is bad to eat then sleep on it ." That is so true. After a long, hard day yesterday, woke up this morning, having slept on a package of crackers and a chunk of cheese. Enjoy.
I’ve found that since I started metformin it’s easier to control my weight. So I checked online and it’s true. People on metformin tend to lose weight.
I can stop the bad carbs. Done it before. but my wife likes desserts and I hate having them around the house as a temptation. We just celebrated 50th anniversary. Hard to believe ! We each do our own thing maybe that’s how you stay together apart.
I started using it again . 500mg three times daily if I can handle it then try to move to four times daily then 1000 twice daily. I’ll kill to kill my appetite!! (😡)!
Here in Australia I have been on the Healthy Weight for Life program which is free with my private health fund. Google it and learn more......it has helped me. I have lost about 22 kgms over the last couple of months. My waist has gone from 112 to 100 cms. I started with shakes for breakfast and lunch and a smaller serve of carbs, veggies etc for dinner and have now maintained my 85 kgms instead of 107 kgms with a shake only for breakfast. Lots of salads, berries etc with chicken, fish etc for other meals have helped. An exercise part of the program is essential. I exercise most days including an intensive gym session once a week. It all helps with fatigue as well. Highly recommended.
I was off work for a year nearly a decade ago. I dropped all soft drinks and made a point to eat healthy. I dropped breakfasts. Drank more water. I also made it a habit to walk on the treadmill more and more each day. Within this time period, I easily lost 25 pounds, with a lot of that being in the gut. I think you have to go big and go for a lifestyle change, and not just a diet. Good luck!
I agree with most of this for me. One suggestion I could add is a low carb/high protein (with some fat for appetite) bar as a dessert option if you’re hungry at night. I gained 20 pounds the first year which included belly fat and gynecomastia (sp?) and muscle loss...not a good look. 1.5 years later, gave up breads, pastas, refined sugar, and alcohol (I cheat a couple times a week). I eat lots of leafy greens, protein, moderate berries in morning, and I exercise every day aerobically with weight training several times a week. I STILL have a little pooch that won’t quite leave (no breasts) but lost and kept steady 30 pound weight loss and have more muscle mass again and good energy. And when, I crave that bowl of ice cream at night (my weakness!), a protein bar usually does the trick.
Pruvit Keytones. Part of a Keto diet. Never hungry taking this drink. I fast at least 16 hours a day. From the time I go go bed until mid day. A drink in the morning. Maybe a 2nd drink in the PM. Light shanks during the day. Big healthy meal at night. I also work out 4-5 days a week. (Cardio & light weights) I have lost most of my belly fat.
I’m taking zytiga as of today. Just came off xtandi. Also taking Eligard every 3 months & Zometa monthly. Good luck.
Your doc ok with what ur doing? Sounds like an easy plan !! I’ve Been in Ketosis before cancer and know it works. How is ur strength and stamina ? Any fatigue?
I feel great. Best i’ve Felt in years. Yes my oncologist is fine with what i’m Doing. Was getting tired a lot before I started the Ketones. Now not tired at all. Started playing golf again in this heat here in Florida without a problem (except my game sucks.)
The ketogenic diet worked wonders for me. I lost so much weight I had to shift away from a vegetarian diet.
My PSA also went down for 8 months in a row after I learned to dial in the keto diet.
It is very demanding and socially isolating. I was aiming for 90% of my calories from healthy fats, 7% protein, and 3% carbs. I ate LOTS of avacados. Lots and lots of green leafy vegetables. Tiny amounts of meat.
It's essentially impossible to go out to a restaurant or a friend's home for a meal and stay on the diet. You either don't eat or break the diet.
There is some research suggesting that pulsing the diet, going on and off hard keto, is best. I'm in an off phase now, eating more but still strictly limited carbs, tons of green leafy vegs (it is summer and they are at their best) .
That gut fat is dangerous; it is strongly associated with visceral fat, wrapped around major organs, including the liver, pancreas and kidneys. Visceral fat is strongly associated with
Coronary heart disease
Cancer
Stroke
Dementia
Diabetes
Depression
Arthritis
Obesity
Sexual dysfunction
Sleep disorders
We know now that fat pumps out hormones and cytokines, which leads to inflammation; at the same time, it interferes with hormones that regulate appetite, weight, mood and brain function.
One huge advantage of the ketogenic diet is that once you get your body into ketosis, your appetite is greatly reduced. Your body is burning fat and there is plenty of that! I have to remind myself to eat lunch even though I rarely have breakfast; hunger no longer makes me look at the clock.
Is the belly profile related to rapid and unintended weight gain? I have gained about 20-25 pounds in the last 45 days and appear to be carrying excess water. Ankles and feet are noticeably swollen and I now have a pronounced gut. Docs are disagreeing over whether it could be cardiac, kidney or liver related. I'm now taking a diuretic with minimal results with an echo scheduled this weekend. Good luck!
The response by "Learn All" is correct. A good strategy for weight loss for many is a slow introduction of intermittent fasting where, over a period of months, one reduces the "eating window" or the time with which food consumption is allowed to as little as 6 or 8 hours. This teaches the body to burn fat for fuel. One can often easily start with a 12 or 14 hour eating window and gradually work this down over many months time to an 8 to 6 hour eating window. Month by month reductions in the eating window time by 30 min to an hour will allow for gradual adaption by the body.
I cannot advise on how to suppress appetite, but I have found that time restricted feeding (TRF) appears to work for me. TRF means that you restrict eating between a 5 to 12 hour window such that you fast for 12 to 19 hours - the longer the fast the better. I started a 6-8 hour TRF (16-18 hour fast) about two months ago, eating a large breakfast at 10 AM a small snack of fruit and nuts at 3ish and a moderate dinner at 6 PM. The diet should be free of sugar and processed carbohydates, other carbohydrates should be reduced drastically, fruit intake moderated (due to fructose content) and in general low glycemic index and glycemic load foods emphasized. To date I have lost 8 lbs and 2+ inches on my waist. Overall it has not been very difficult although it takes about a week or so to become accustomed to the regimen. It has also been easy to distract myself from the mild morning hunger "pains" by drinking drinking fluids (like tea) as well as keeping busy. I often exercise before breakfast. If you have an urge to eat something when your not supposed to, then drink fluids (water, tea, veggie smoothies, etc). I should mention that I have become more energetic and alert after starting TRF. An alternative to TRF is intermittent fasting where one fasts 1 to 2 times a week, but that is other post. Cheers, Phil
One way to lose fat is go into calorie deficit by exercising in the morning before breakfast-- gets the heart rate up, increases metabolism, and lowers blood sugar.
You're not eating right. Have veggies, whey or veggie protein drink, oatmeal/hot cereals for breakfast with nuts and a little bit of fruit on it. Eat healthy fish and big salad for lunch, with nuts on it and no oil, just some apple cider vinegar and a little fruit. Have a veggies soup blended with low sodium vegetable broth (Use blender/vitamix) maybe a little gouda cheese and a couple triscuits with it. You wont be craving foods, wont be overly hungry and your belly will diminish. I have a six pack and dont even try to have one. Watch the videos: Forks over knives and In Defense of Food.
I used to eat big dinners. Even though i was never overweight, they're is no need to eat big dinners because the body doesn't need all that energy/food because all most people do is watch tv and then go to bed so there food doesn't metabolize so the body stores it into fat. Allot of the food people eat just gets excreted. You can watch forks over knives for free on Netflix and but in defence of food online. There are also countless videos on YouTube explaining how hunger goes away when you eat veggies and fiber heavy foods. Good luck.
Thanks. I too saved dinner as my biggest meal. Then snacks after dinner. Crazy appetite. I’ve stopped. One glass of red wine rather than four glasses of white. My bad . Feeling better already!🤗
