Photowalk Challenge May/June : Repeating Patterns: Holes!

MissUnderstanding profile image

I’ve been out for a lovely walk in the sunshine (apart from getting stung by nettles as a squeezed into a hedge to let a car pass).

I noticed how many leaves had holes in them and that was the pattern I looked for during the rest of the walk.

This is my favourite picture because I think it includes the hole maker!

Nice walk for you today MissUnderstanding, the holes in the leaves are caused by nasty little insects which we call pests although I don't know what those pests are called.

Actually more likely to be friends causing holes in nettles as ladybird larvae live on nettles 😊🐞

I hate nettles especially being stung by them especially when you have shorts or leggings on. Hope you’re not stung too bad.

They are a nuisance when they get you through your clothes. It wasn’t too bad thankfully. Mainly an itchy thigh.

Nature is a wonderful repairer isn't she? These leaves fed the feeder but new will grow again next year

Apparently nettles are a good for vitamins, a bit like spinach. Collecting nettles can be tricky, but if you wear a pair of Marigolds you will be well protected. Just wash the nettles in a colander and remove the roots and /or insects and place them into hot water on the stove and cook for about 3-4 mins. Don’t worry about the sting as that will disappear during cooking.

Just serve with a bit of butter along with any other green leafy vegetables and you will receive the benefit of this free leafy green. Do enjoy!

I’ve known this for decades, but I’ve never gotten myself to do this. The stinginess puts me off too much.

But how does that taste? Like spinach?

That’s a great suggestion. I’ve eaten nettle pie in a restaurant once and that was lovely. I’ve never thought of cooking them myself!

nice hole-y pattern! Great pics. Focussing on those little things somehow weirdly refreshes the mind, doesn’t it.
