What struck me about this walk was that there was less to smell than I had expected and often what I was noticing was the absence of an anticipated smell (which was often a good thing). For example, I didn't pick up much in the multi-storey car park. It was a very squeaky clean and expensive one, perhaps that's why, and not much movement going on when we were there. Even the coffee shop didn't advertise itself as such through fragrance! Nothing from the plants in the Winter Garden.
Midday and midweek, passing pubs only the faintest 'stale booze' smell (apparently my father and my aunt as young children used to open the doors of such establishments in this city and shout that it stank before running away.) A bit of bakery whiff in M&S Food Hall and the most obvious 'hit you before you see anything' scent was a potted lily just breaking into full flower.
Even the library where we settled ourselves to while away an hour left my nose curiously disappointed.
