I ran a bit hard yesterday and decided that my legs deserved a break. The plan was for a walk followed by a gentle jog but I was having such a great time walking that I ended up walking the whole 5km. Beautiful day. Mist in the valleys, birds singing, snowdrops blooming. Gorgeous.
I set myself the challenge of counting as many different birds as possible and soon gave up because there were too many. Blackbirds, magpies, bluetits, chaffinches, buzzards, ducks, hens and geese (pet!). Plus either crows/ravens/rooks. I knew the difference once! Also spotted some squirrels. The field I would normally walk through had some lively cows so I stayed on the road and turned on to a bridleway next to a field of fat horses. Maybe they’re in foal. Maybe it’s the last of the Christmas treats! Keeping to a walk really gave me the opportunity to appreciate the scenery.
A bonus? The veg stall in the village today had brownies. Happy days!

What a beautiful, peaceful place to walk. And fresh brownies to boot! Happy days indeed 😊 well done! Is this a run / walk everyday challenge you're doing?
I was feeling especially lucky today with all the birds singing and the sun shining! The veg stall has been adding treats every week and I think it’s important to encourage the lady to keep selling them!
The 12 minute daily walk is this month’s challenge…
That was a lovely 5K nature walk you had today MissUnderstanding, must have been very relaxing for you.On most days at 2pm I take my neighbours dog Holly a walk but today at 2 her owner took me and Holly on his car to a nearby canal and all three of us had a short 2K walk along the canal, we saw some wild life as well like ducks, swans and some wild birds, a buzzard in the distance, as I say it was a short 2K walk with the dog, with all the stops it took almost 30 minutes, last year I ran on part of that canal my 100th 5K (not ) parkrun in a time of just over 32 minutes.
I really like an early afternoon walk. That usually fits best with work and other commitments but today it’s been here there and everywhere. I enjoyed still seeing the frost. It had melted by my run time yesterday. It sounds like you’ve got a great amount of nature for spotting too. I love this time of year when suddenly it springs into action again. I bet that 100th (not)parkrun was memorable!
The 100th was very memorable, I ran it last May along part of the route I walked with the dog today, just as a matter of interest with the dog stopping to sniff things, the 2K walk this afternoon was around 32 minutes, last May for that run with no dog of course, my 5K run time was 32:28.
It was amazing how much more I noticed! I do that route at least four times a week and I only realised today that you can see a woodland in the distance that I never knew existed. I had a good look in the trees for birds and spotted a few lost footballs. On my run the other day (Out and back with Tom Sachs on NRC-very enjoyable) I was encouraged to look up and see what I could see. I wasn’t expecting pants up a tree!!!
I’ve probably undersold it! The lady that runs it sells a few other local goodies too. A very good selection of bakery things, soup, pickles etc. I’m trying to shop local and independent where possible so I really like it when she’s there!
It’s usually pretty around here but today was just one of those particularly lovely days! Brownies I find can be a little hit and miss with whether they’re dry, too cakey etc but these were super. All in all a massive win!
