February Challenge - Take a daily 12 min Walk

February challenge:

★★★Go out for those daily (or almost daily)walks, but just for 12 minutes … and see how that feels.★★★

At the beginning of this year, the #walk1000Miles challenge beckoned me to sign up. And the temptation was simply too great to resist. The mile tracker looked enticing, the medals looked gorgeous, and our walking community’s chatter about this challenge simply filled me with so much excitement.

But I had to admit to myself, I was a long way off from being able to just come close to this target. So I adapted the challenge to my needs. Shorter walks, and I added into the challenge my runs and rows. Whatever keeps those gremlins from appearing at the threshold of our house doors, right?

For some of you, including my own hubby, walking 2.5 miles per day is a regular daily activity. However some of us, including myself, we feel we need something smaller… or shorter. So the challenge this month is going to be something much more humble. It is to walk just for 12 minutes daily…. Or almost daily…because life sometimes gets in the way of living right?

So 12 minutes….

It seems, according to Annabel Street’s chapter on 12 minute walks, that only this short duration 80% metabolites are changed for the better. And metabolites are small molecules that affect our metabolism, how fast we heal, how we turn food into energy, inflammation and all sorts of other things, such as the propensity to develop diabetes or liver disease or breaking down fat stores.

All that after 12 minutes of vigorous walking.

(Information from the seventh chapter of the book “52 ways to walk” by Annabel Street, “Take a 12-min walk”)

★★★So our challenge this month is to go out for daily walks, but just for 12 minutes … and see how that feels. (And if you need a couple or recovery days here and there, then that is ok.) ★★★

I love this idea! Count me in! Twelve minutes is almost a perfect loop of the village ending at the shop. It’s fate…

ohhh, is it a nice shop? Hot coffees? Chocolates????

It’s a proper old fashioned village store with added hipster bits available! You can buy tofu, refillable milk, washing up liquid and fabric softener etc, coffees from the posh machine, local bakery goods, cards, local fruit and veg… Plus all the stuff you’d expect in a little corner shop. It’s a great asset to have nearby! I justify buying treats in there as supporting the local economy! It’s often on the way home from a walk or run so they’re used to seeing me in various shades of disarray with a reward coffee in hand! My favourite time is 4pm is when then bakery things are often reduced!

I will do my usual walk but a separate 12 min walk sometime in the day is that ok?

Is this as well as any running we do, or instead?

Well, what would be a step up from where you are? For me, if I can close the last Apple Fitness open rings in a month through walking, I’d be happy. (See pic) That’s my minimum threshold.

And beyond that, I’ll see if I can get at least 5 walks per week, on top of running and rowing. It will be a stretch for me, so I’d be also happy with my threshold plan.

So what do you think should be your-one-step-up goal?

At the moment I am trying to get back to non stop running, using the Conqueror challenges to get there. I did a short one, (Marathon to Athens)non stop running (any distance, no walk breaks) to start the month, now I am doing another (Trek to Petra) where I only post running distances of 6 KM or more to the challenge.

I normally run every other day, and walk on the in-between-days, covering 3.5 - 5 KM... this is quite challenging for me, sometimes I still get very tired, so I'm happy with where I am.

That sounds like a fabulous goal. I love the conqueror apps. They do motivate me to get out there!

Running and walking on alternate days is a massive achievement, not even to mention the 6k runs at a time! Well done!

Thank you, I do feel the Levo Thyroxine is working although I think I still need a bigger dose. Got another consultation next week, so I'll see then. I'm hoping for a 5 mile/8 KM run tomorrow, hope it's not too ambitious... funnily enough, walking seems to tire me more than running.

I'm looking forward to getting a bit of distance back, al my favourite places to run are further than I can manage at the moment.

You can count me in as well CBDB, however, it takes me 12 minutes to get to the start of one of my 5K runs, usually in the morning, in the afternoon 12 minutes is only half way around the park that I take Holly, my neighbours dog a walk in the afternoon.

Just had to share this from last months magazine: 10 reasons why walking is your best friend!

My favourite one is Number 1: it’s ready to go out when you are! (12 minutes, here I come!)

I'd like to give this a go (although it won't be vigorous walking as that really doesn't agree with me, running is gentler!) Missed 1st, reckon I got 12 minutes walking in around my Runniversary run today.

Hi there - I'm a bit late to be joining in with your challenge! But I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning this book. I've just reserved it from the library as it looks interesting. I'll wait to see what your March challenge is next week and perhaps join in with that instead. 😃
