healthunlocked.com/strength...

Here we are at week 8 already, how is it going for everyone. Please join in as we share our walking adventures and accomplishments and encourage each other to get our steps in or increase our distances or speed.

On the C25k forum I started a 6 wk quest three years ago and between The admins we keep it going to help keep everyone motivated but working towards their own personal goals.

So I would like to do a similar thing on here for walking. This is going to be 12 weeks plan in total as for some of us we need a bit more time to get back on our feet but it will be very inclusive and doesn't matter what you walking goals are, please feel free to join.

Here are a set of example as to what your goals could be.

1) I want to be able to go for little walks a couple of times a week, not bothered with speed or distance just getting out the door.

2) I want to be able to do 3x 5km walks a week

3) I'm training for a ......... km event.

4) I want go out for .... walks a week to help me destress.

There are so many different combinations and there will be non that are not good goals.

The aim in the 12 weeks plan is to build you up to a walking fitness level that suits yourself and your personal circumstances. The most important thing is to make your goals manageable and not to over extend yourself. It is always better to get to goal and go further than not reach a goal as that demoralises you.

Please add your name below if you would like to take part as we support each other to reach our goals.

This week has been a good week with walking. Not only have I got over my chest infection enough to walk but MrRfc has been out walking with me too which has been great.

Am I too late to join? I'd like to walk 30 mins per day. Can anyone recommend some good walking trainers to help?

Welcome onboard, I have added your name. On shoes it depends what sort of walking you do and price range. If it is more off road (country side) you are better off with some that have good treads, if it is mainly pavement walking you can get away with a good pair of trainers. For both types decathlon or sports direct are good places to start as they have ranges in both at all price levels and good staff that can help. A bit pricier is clarks they have a good range too.

Thank you. I'll try Sports direct and Clarks. I usually wear walking boots in the day during the winter because of arthritis but they're a bit heavy for the summer. Also, I walk in the country and on pavements so i probably need two pairs.

Welcome onboard, I have added your name. 2km a day sounds like a good place to start and you and your dog can build up together.

I averaged 11,000 daily steps last week, which is more than I was aiming for! I was backwards and forwards to school to support with SATs, and I walked the long way round to add in the steps. One unexpected benefit was that I lost a pound; I have been struggling to maintain a three stone weight loss from last year.

11,000 steps that is a great achievement, well done. Walking is a great way to lose weight, I'm sure people don't give it the real credit it derserves for over all health.

Thank you! I am really enjoying getting out there. Once I get my pace up I can feel my heart rate increasing, which has to be a good thing.

I've been enjoying my walking, where I live is pretty hilly so I'm limited for running routes, I normally stay down in the valley where it's flatter, but for walking I'm just going up those hills! I'm getting to see places and small routes I haven't seen since I started running, every cloud as a silver lining!

I'm glad it is filling a spot for you. Like me it is great to be out there even if we can't run just yet. I can't imagine not going out now, I just love the outdoors.

I can imagine that will be quite taxing on the brain, the things we take for granted. It is really good that they have given you some exercises to help combat these problems, it sounds like they are really on the case. Happy walking.

Hi, I'm waiting for my replacement Fitbit which I should receive soon. So I'd like to join. I normally walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.

This will be my third Fitbit. The first two were the Charge HR, the one I'm waiting for is the Charge 2. Hopefully it'll last longer than the previous two.
