The coil

I had the coil fitted yesterday, I’m in a lot of pain still, I’m wondering what are other people’s experiences with the coil?

How soon can you have a bath?

How long have you bled for afterwards?

Any side affects I need to be aware of?

Thanks ladies :)

Is that due to pain or bleeding?

They gave me very little info before I got it put in they didn’t even tell me they use anaesthetic to get it in

About things like getting a bath and risk of infection as it was only fitted yesterday afternoon

Bath you have to wait 24 hours then fine . Infection risk you should speak to the person who fitted.

The symptoms of an infection may include:

lower abdominal pain.

vaginal discharge, possibly with a foul odor.

pain when urinating.

painful intercourse.

a fever.

irregular menstruation.

Unless you have any of the above you should be ok ......

Hi Pheebo, I’ve had a Coil now for 11 years, had some pain for a day or two after fitting, nothing that over the counter pain killers couldn’t help. Bleeding on and off for a couple of weeks, more in the first couple of days then fine. Best thing I ever had, no periods since and I feel I avoided a hysterectomy as had fibroids. Really hope it works for you 😊 xxx

Hi Leaf65 thanks for your reply, I’m on all sorts of painkillers and other meds for other reasons you see so paracetamol and ibuprofen aren’t really an option for me, it seems to have calmed down abit now though. Thanks for sharing your experience x

Which type of coil have you had fitted?

I've had 3 marina coils and I now have a copper coil. Each type has it's own issues and risks.

Personally I've found the "kicked by a horse" feeling wears off in a couple of days and the bleeding tends to settle quite quickly, just a few days. Ibuprofen and paracetamol is generally effective for the pain and a hot water bottle or wheat bag helps with cramping. Give it a little time to settle but if you're worried call your GP for advice.

I’m not sure which one it is, on my card it says neo safe t 380 i think it’s the copper one?

Thanks for the advice x

I'm not sure of the medical terminology but the copper coil is rarely used these days so it's likely its a marina as it's most commonly used. The copper coil is only used where a hormonal birth control can't be used (in my case because I had hormone positive breast cancer).

The marina will likely stop your periods or reduce them but the copper coil might make them longer and heavier.

I would get the details from whoever inserted it and do a little reading up about the risks and benefits, just so you're better informed.

I had a mirena coil fitted but, it made me feel like I had been kicked in the stomach by a horse & it also caused me to bleed on & off. After 4 weeks of this I had it removed. I will never have a coil fitted again!!

I’ve googled mine and it says there’s copper in the stem only. Oh gosh that sounds really bad! I hope I feel okay soon enough x
