Hello, I had fibroids they were the Submucosal type that bulge out into the uterus. This increase the area of the lining which means there is a bigger area that bleeds during your period. This was my only symptom, heavy periods. I was offered the Mirena to help bleeding. It doesn’t actually do anything to the fibroids. They still grow. The Progesterone in the Mirena thins the lining of the womb so there is less to bleed from. I didn’t have the Mirena but know lots of people who do have it and their periods are virtually non existent.

Hi thank you so much for your response! My symptom is also heavy and longer (12-14 days bleeding during my period. That’s why I have been offered the Mirena.

May I ask what did you do for the treatment of the fibroid?

Hi so I was 50 yrs 2018 when I was offered a Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) sometimes called UAE. They block the blood supply to fibroids so they stop growing and shrink a bit. I had a couple of yrs of light periods and then went into menopause so now no periods atall. Depending on size of them they can remove them during a hysteroscopy. When mine were checked during a hysteroscopy he said if they are small enough they would remove them. I think that is called an ablation. But they do proper operations to take them out completely called Myomectomy. Mirena coil is the most likely the easiest first option and does help a lot of women.

I have a 8cm fibroid and I had Mirena which worked well the first 2 months.

Then I had heavy bleeding again with passing blood clots. Mirena expelled and I was told that Mirena does not do much for fibroids.

Re-embolisation: I was considering it but my concern is that those particles they inject in the veins, if these are connected to the ovaries too, will shut down the ovaries as well. Therefore I am considering myomectomy, unless it’s clear from exams that the veins that take blood to the fibroid are not connected in any way to the ovaries.

I have also been advised this. Although still waiting and periods are now infrequent so I dont know what to do. I dont think the coil does anything to reduce the fibroid but may stop them growing and keeps lining of womb thinner. Good luck.
