Hello, My name is Derya. I am a visiting scholar at Cambridge. My smear test was a positive and high risk of cancer. After colposcopy was taken a small biopsy. The result of biopsy, not cancer. But they advise me again smear test between in 12 months. As I understand the hospital add me to this portal. I am not sure what is the main purpose of this portal. Does everybody has an illness here? and maybe talking about the experience of illness? So we can manage it truely and un-stressfully.

Hi dy253, I think the purpose of this group is to get support from people who have similar issues. Not everyone on here will have an illness. If you want to ask any questions then chances are there might be someone else on here that has gone through the same thing and can help.

I also had an abnormal smear and needed to go for a biopsy every 6 months. eventually they decided to remove some cells and I then reverted to smear tests every year for a while. I can't remember if it was for 3 years after or 5 years after. All was clear and I am now back to the normal screening programme.

Hope that helps?

Thank You, I understand! I have a question about this illness. How do you manage your sexual life? I am single. But I met a man. Do doctors advise during this time protection? A condom is enough for protection? I forgot it to ask to the doctor.

You can't pass on cancer but it's been shown that you are more likely to get cancer of the cervix if you have the HPV virus (which can be sexually transmitted). I wasn't advised to use any extra precautions but my abnormal smear was before they had made the link. Although I don't think the advice has changed.

If you are not in a long term relationship then you should always use a condom. As well as preventing pregnancy it can help prevent against a lot of sexually transmitted diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in the UK and many show no early signs so by the time it's realised it's already passed on. So stay safe and use a condom.

Hope that helps.
