My mum has been suffering Vagina atrophyfor a long time only this past year she has been in absolute agony. They just keep giving her oestrogen cream and strong painkillers. She sits a lot in tears with the soreness and the pain . Can anyone give us any ideas of how to treat this or how to reduce the pain that she’s in . She is 75 and totally had enough. Many thanks.

😏 It must be dreadful, I can well understand you searching for something to give relief with this.. I’m nearing that age myself, and just the thought of having to have any ‘procedure’ down there...but if it promised to give relief 🤔 There’s an explanation online about a specific treatment that might help. Search londonwomenscentre.co.uk I sincerely hope she gets help soon. 🙂 xB

* On the home page, look to the heading and click on the pink square, scroll down to conditions, scroll down to vaginal Atrophy. Scroll down to Treatment and click on options. There is a new type of Laser Therapy.*

Other than topical oestrogen and moisturiser like Replens there isn't much else available. Has she tried different sorts of oestrogen, the only one I could use was Vagifem but after many years it now causes a reaction so I get by with just using Replens.

A bio-identical HRT might help, but there could be a health reason why your mum's not been offered this. Can she see a female GP who would be more understanding & helpful?

Also ask to have her thyroid hormones checked, T3 levels being the most important one. Hypothyroid women with low levels suffer worse symptoms.

I’m sorry to hear this. I have a condition called Lichen Sclerosis which causes some of the symptoms you mention your Mum is getting. A lot of Dr’s aren’t very well educated on it but do have a look at the symptoms. I have a steroid cream for when I get outbreaks. X
