Hi, everyone. I think this is my first post here. I have been trying for a long time to lose weight, problem is I eat as I should in the first part of the day, then in the evening I over eat. Could you advise me on this? Thank you very much.

Hello, alina29, and welcome to the forum. Well done on dipping your toe in :)

It's hard to say without knowing more detail but the possibilities are that you're not eating enough earlier in the day or you're choosing foods that don't keep you satisfied.

I suggest you have a look at the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans, and you may get some tips there. Have a browse at all of our forum activities here healthunlocked.com/weight-l... and join in as much as you can.

Meanwhile, here's a simple guide you may find useful phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

Thank you very much, BridgeGirl, for welcoming me, for your reply and for helping me. Yes, I believe you are right, I am not eating enough earlier in the day because I do not feel the need, I have other things to do and I am not very hungry. I will try to eat more in the first part of the day. Thank you.

Welcome, Alina. I used go have the problem of eating too much in the evening. I think this is a common problem because when you are tired from a long day you tend to give into temptation. For me, I found that weighing all my food has helped me not just make make better decisions earlier in the day and in the evening, but more importantly, it has to a large extent stopped me from having to make many of these previously hard decisions. I don't believe that any food is good or bad, or that eating at any time is good or bad; it is just that being intentional about how much and what you are eating seems to be a relatively easy, although it is a bit of a pain to weigh and look everything up the first couple days, now I actually find it fun, especially as I realize I am making better decisions that align with what I want to so. For example, I happily had white rice tonight - a white refined carb that I used to avoid because I thought it was bad and would make me gain weight. I actually enjoy eating white rice and 100g of white rice fit easily and nicely into my target budget.

Thank you very much, Sunrisetabby. I will try weighing some of my food. You are right, at the end of the day, we are tired and tend to give into temptation. I will focus on making better choices in the day.

One good choice at a time, you've got it! Initially, I was embarrassed how my healthy snacks, such as a handful of almonds or walnuts, were actually over 500 calories and more meal than snack. This type of knowledge can be helpful.

Hi Alina29, are you snacking or are you overeating at your evening meal? If you have your main meal early in the evening you may find a planned snack later perhaps with a hot drink will help. If its your meal that too much then yes planning and weighing will help. Could you also take up knitting or online scrabble or do a jig saw puzzle or something similar to keep your hands and your mind busy.

Hi, Frenchfields. Thank you for your answer. I take my son from school, we arrive around 4, and although I have balanced meals til 4, true, sometimes frugal meals, cos i am busy and I am not hungry, after 4 I eat a lot and pretty much everything. 😔

It sounds like you could increase and nutritionally improve what you eat in the daytime. Maybe organise breakfast and lunch the evening before, as if you were going out of the house to work, it doesn’t have to be complicated but include some protien and fat/ oil. If you want to snack at ’teatime’ make or buy something you enjoy, lots of options in the shops or recipe online. I have a rule that I don’t eat anything unless its put on a plate or in a dish and I have to sit down properly and eat it. Even fruit , cut it up and put it on a plate. And plan your evening meals. Perhaps try the new routine for a week and see how you get on. Good luck.

Hi .. there is something called Night Eating Syndrome . Here in Philly, there are therapists who can explain this to you and help you with it. I am Seventy five and i've always been eating at night. I am five foot eleven inches and two hundred twenty five pounds which is not bad but I should be one ninety. It's all from the bad habit of eating most of my calories at night. Good luck..

Hi, Eryl. Thank you for your reply. No, i am not taking vitamin D 3. I never thought I do not get enough D3 vitamin, as I do walk a lot, minimum 7 _10 km every day...

Well done on the walking but we tend to wrap up warm in winter which cuts down the amount of sunlight we get. I take 5,000 iu of D3 daily and uo the dose in midwinter. It has a dramatic effect on your immune system as well.

I can lose weight when I don't eat late at night but I crave toast around midnight. When I do this I gain weight if I don't do it I lose. I've been good this week so far so will see if I lose on Friday when I get weighed.

How's it going, Lincsguy?

Why not join the Daily Diary for a few days, share your meal plans, see what others are planning and then you may get some helpful ideas? You'll find it in this list of Pinned Posts, 4th one down healthunlocked.com/weight-l...

PS fruit is nature's sweeties, so go sparingly with them: berries are the best option

What I've found is that a lot of evening eating goes down due to emotional eating after the 'stresses' of the day.

Pop your hand on your heart, close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths and ask yourself.... What am I feeling right now.? And why do I want to eat? and see what your brain tells you. This is where I'd start.

I'd also look for patterns and gather awareness about how my life and weight loss goes together.

Hi, wellness4women3a. Thank you. You are totally right with the "stresses" of the day. Yesterday I had a walk in town, around 4_5, i totally relaxed and managed not to overeat in the evening. And I like this, awareness about life. I will try to be more aware, destress myself and become a better healthier version of myself. Thank you.
