Painful tummy ache in the night from eating high fat/carb food in the evening

I have been eating a low fat healthy diet but when I eat fatty foods and too many carbs I get intense stomach pains in the night. I comfort eat in the evening and this starts the problem a few hours later. Does anyone experience this? It's like my body is rejecting unhealthy foods.

Please advise I will appreciate it. The doctor said it could be food sensitivity or IBS but couldn't say

Hi and welcome, Janechic :)

We are not medically trained, so our advice will be from our own experience. Whereabouts is your pain, because it sounds very much like gallbladder pain to me?

My advice, is not to eat junk food, especially in the evening and stick to healthy eating at regular mealtimes. Low fat eating is now known not to be healthy. Have a look at this for guidance phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

This may help with your comfort eating helpguide.org/articles/diet...

I don’t know, but it sounds very unpleasant. Wouldn’t it work to just stay away from junk food as suggested by moreless ? Those foods don’t help you lose weigh either, I’m sure.

Hi Janechic it sounds like ibs which is a nasty horrible condition i know!

And it seems like your comfort eating is actually making you UNcomfortable right?! Your body wants you to find a new way to cope with your emotions. It's telling you in the only way it can..

Best of luck finding new coping strategies. You've got this! 💪🌹

Hi Janechic

It could be IBS, which can be triggered by sugary and high carb foods if you are eating those late in the evening. My IBS has really settled right down since avoiding these foods.

Perhaps try having more to eat at your evening meal and try some other ways of distraction to avoid snacking-it sounds like this nasty stomach pain could be a good incentive to try.

If it doesn’t settle get back to your GP

Good luck

Good morning Janechic , Darling. Sorry to hear all this and of course pain and discomfort in the middle of the night produces anxiety, and anxiety increases stomach acid, which produces gut rot on a festive scale. All anxiety-making stuff.

First of all look again please at you low-fat diet, which is likely to be miserable and unsustainable, because you're saying you eat high-carb stuff sometimes which sounds like comfort-bingeing in response to your body yearning for fats. Please consider that actually most of your woes come from sugar in one form or another, and that unsaturated fats and even in small quantities some of the naughty kind, are positively good for you as part of a healthy diet. Your tum needs proper sustenance; it needs to be lightly lined and happy but not working hard at breaking down stuff when you are lying down at night.

As babss has just so rightly said, if this persists, go to your doctor but meanwhile, can I suggest a couple of things? I spent years with IBS, then tried coming off most lactose products, mostly milk. I do use milk a lot, but I now use lactose-free stuff which is now very good. Look for the carton with the black and white cow on it - they're not allowed to call it milk (which it is) so it's often in a different fridge section in supermarkets. Avoid soft cheeses but I find cheddar is fine, also a little bit of butter. I have stopped eating my beloved Greek yoghurt because the effects on my gutlings are Gothic. Now I eat lactose-free yoghurt (Lidl?) and fruit soya by a well-known brand.

Then a few months ago I reluctantly made the connection between evening milk chocolate bars and a stimulated bowel: night tummy gripes and more you don't want to know about. Stopped that and it went away.

Try to cut out lactose, also sugary snacks in the evening. I've said this before on the forum but a plate of cheese chunks and a sliced apple or dates are very satisfying while you're watching telly. Then try to increase your exercise before you go to bed. Might be a gentle toddle round the block or a bit of daft-dancing to Youtube.

Try not to worry; throw out the carpy food; try a change of diet. Don't starve yourself then guzzle. There's a way through this.

My love and positive thoughts to you. Betty x
