Hi Basten. I'm 71 and live alone. Until mid March this year I had my daughter and my 2 yr old granddaughter living with me (and now haven't seen them for 4 months) . On my own I started doing a bit of comfort eating but then decided I wanted to be still around when it's possible for us to get together again. It hasn't been too bad - I've found leaving a decent overnight 'fasting period' ok. I do miss nice bread - it was so easy to make a sandwich for lunch - but am getting over it. Is there a particular food or issue for you?

basten in reply toPurpleRaine

Hi yes I have always had a sweet tooth and have overdone it!! So trying to stop but I get hungry all the time and snack on too many nuts and cheese so I'm gonna have to try real hard. I'm 3vstone over weight havevhigh bp and now swollen ankles. Had an ECG and nurse or doc should ring me soon . I dont do enough exercise to burn calories. Medication too increased my weight and has a reputation for increase in appetite.

It's nice to know there are others here about my age now thank you

Lots of oldies on here. I’m 80:this year and have been on this forum for 4 years. I’ve struggled from time to time but the support here is invaluable. Good luck😊

Still getting over CBA syndrome (Cant be Arsed) and need for chocolate that I thought I'd got rid of for ever! Otherwise fine.

Unfortunately we have a new ruling from today that masks must be worn all the time out of the house even if there's noone else around - this could put a big dent in my walking which I'd just got back up to 8k a day (with pit stops!). I'm waiting to speak to doctor next week to ask about health exemption but it's not sounding promising. It's a silly rule - I walk down to the Costa and rarely meet anyone (and put mask on to pass them when I do). Breathing is hard enough in hot humid weather and may prove nigh on impossible with mask .... individual sport in open air is one exemption but suspect that means runners and joggers not walkers!

wa2un7 profile image
wa2un7Maintainer in reply tocheritorrox

I haven’t been out since early March so haven’t really had to use masks yet. Don’t know how I’ll do with my COPD but would a visor be allowed instead?😊

basten profile image
basten in reply towa2un7

If you check on Www.gov.org.uk/virus you might find useful info. Some people written on a poster on the bus say are exempt from wearing masks and I suspect you'll be one. You could always phone GP and they may issue an exemption letter in case anyone such as police or member of public have a go.

wa2un7 profile image
wa2un7Maintainer in reply tobasten

Thanks for your reply. I know I would possibly be an exemption but to be honest I’m not sure I want to be. I’ll certAinly try to use one once I’m allowed to shop etc again as I’d rather be safe than sorry.😊

basten profile image
basten in reply towa2un7

Understand completely. If you can manage wearing one then all you can do is try. Good luck

cheritorrox profile image
cheritorrox in reply towa2un7

My COPD isn't that bad yet - can still keep moving (which seems to help keep lungs working too even if not at full capacity). I'm not sure if visors allowed here in Spain under the new rules - not very practical when need sunglasses too!

Good luck when you do get out - and yes, try to wear mask even if you have to stop to catch breath! :)

My daughter has to wear mask all day and by end of day her chest is tighter from her asthma but she has to wear it

I’m 68 in a couple of weeks. I’ve been on this forum since January 2017. I don’t live on my own, although I did for 10 years after my first husband died, so I know it can be hard. And lockdown would have made it harder, I’m sure. But we are all here because we struggle either to lose weight, or to maintain that loss. So young and old, we are all in the same boat. And for me, age really doesn’t matter here, any more than gender (which was a similar question someone else asked here recently). So just keep coming here and join in. There is a lot to get out of it!

Thankyou. I take to my kids but they get fed up hearing it. I find my two friends dont seem to want to hear it. I wake up and think here we go again try try try but it so hard for me

Hi Bastenb! we're all ages and all genders shapes and sizes on here! The thing we have in common is that we've all struggled with our weight and find camaraderie a real boost! Younger people can be/feel lonely too, so I would encourage you to chat. I'm 64 and I'm learning all the time from young and not so young about what works well for my body I've progressed from the NHS 12 wk plan to LCHF - sort of, which means I take every day as it comes! Lots of great groups it's up to you to how much you want to engage. Good luck for the weeks ahead!

Hi I’m 70, been on and off here, more off recently, for about 3 years.

I’m 5 stone over weight but when I get going on here I do lose weight but I just don’t keep going. So bad I know but the support on here, no matter when you come on, is absolutely brilliant. The admin team and all the lovely people become friends.

A couple of years ago a lot of them changed their names for security reasons I think, so I don’t know who’s who now.

Lots of love all you lovely people.

basten profile image

How are you doing now. Lost anything? If so what diet if any are you doing and what foods are you cutting out. (Besides biscuits and cake!!!)

Hi basten, you will hopefully find talking to a professional is very rewarding. I have done it myself in the past and it’s very helpful. Try to relax and enjoy it, this is entirely confidential so you can say anything and no one judges. My weight has stayed pretty much the same for years, about 5 stone overweight. It’s taking its toll a bit the older I’m getting but I should do something about it.

I take water tablets for my bp and that’s all as I seem to have bad reactions to certain medication. Please stop beating yourself up. Try to enjoy life. I know at the moment that’s hard but we are all here so we’ve been given a chance to start again.

Listen to the lovely people on here or just come on to read others journeys. It’s a lovely feeling knowing you belong to a good crowd who really do care.

Good luck. Xx

Yes hi. Agree change has to come from within. I am a very negative person all my life. Trying to change but hard. Try to not talk miserable stuff to two friends I kep in touch with...that's hard. I've always talked all my life about how I'm feeling etc. Thinking I was the only one unhappy. Woke up this morning....same thing...just dont want to get up but do.

Hi Basten....I’ve just joined ...I’m 65 and really struggling with my eating and exercise, especially during lockdown, when I just turned to eating treats to cheer me up. I have to call a halt now though.....so giving this a try.......eating low carb and walking 30 mins a day.....hope it will help! Good to know there are others my age on here......I’m going to confess that mastering the technology is just as hard for me as the dieting 😂😂. Take care everyone and keep safe .

basten profile image
basten in reply toJanRose21

Yes me too. Welcome what diet are you trying. ?

JanRose21 profile image
JanRose21 in reply tobasten

I’m basically cutting out anything white... bread, rice, potatoes, anything from the bakery really and making half my plate full of low carb veg.... broccoli, cauliflower, carrots... or salad. More fish and less meat... I did spot a link on here for low carb and also one for diabetics.... so I’ve done a meal plan for the week based on those. Keeping it simple and trying to make better choices really. Not doing v well on drinking more water so far though 😟.... how about you?

basten profile image
basten in reply toJanRose21

No fallen right off wagon last two days. Have always been prone to binge eating and after a good start yesterday I binged on lots of ice cream and chocolate big time. I hate myself for it and just cant have anything sweet as it starts me off big time. Its cos I'm worried about health and overweight and swollen feet ankles last 2 weeks high bp and that starts me binging which is obviously making it worse. Must try start afresh tomorrow. Each night in the mirror I hate what I see and lecture myself and tell myself off and my kids dont know I'm doing it . I will start tomorrow. If I dont buy it I cant est it and I know the cravings will diminish. I do drink a lot of water but on top of everything the medication I'm on makes me continually hungry as it's a side effect. But I'm not helping myself . Thankyou

IndigoBlue61 profile image
IndigoBlue61 in reply tobasten

Woah! Steady on there! No beating yourself up, and please stop the self hate. It’s biology, it’s not your fault, honestly. If we are tired, stressed or anxious our brains demand energy dense food like chocolate and ice cream. Plus, certain medications can make things worse.

So, first of all, well done for coming on here and letting off steam 😊👏👍.

Next, here’s a big hug ((❤️)) you sound as if you need one

Right, now some practical suggestions, I hope you’ve had chance to read some of the links and articles on here, I see you’ve been trying Low Carb but not doing that great with it, were you eating enough? Under eating is the single biggest cause of weight loss failure, and it really isn’t necessary. Maybe join the Daily Diary, Tuesdays has just opened here, healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... tell us what kind of foods you like and we can help you plan your meals for tomorrow.

Lastly, if you feel like a chat, or just want to tell us about your day, then we have a Chat Thread called Nutty Natterings here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... where you can share any news or just say hello

Please take care, we are all here for you

Hello yes I needed a hug right now. Sitting here crying and sugar depresses us I know. I'm so glad to have told you all as I feel so down and alone right now. I do have a bit of trouble understanding the links you mentioned but will look. I am also very anxious about talk with psychiatrist next week as she wants to reduce some meds which I've been on ages and I know I wont sleep and can get really bad withdrawals no sleep anymore and panic attacks or even seizures. I'll look at the links . You have all been very kind..

My son keeps telling me to stop putting myself down and doing it. My mother wrote a note before she died saying same thing . It's been a life long issue with me. I've never liked myself .

IndigoBlue61 profile image
IndigoBlue61 in reply tobasten

Oh that’s so sad 😞 I don’t know why we are all so quick to beat ourselves up

Hope you get some good news from the Psychiatrist next week.

basten profile image
basten in reply toIndigoBlue61

Yes I'm not looking forward to it.

in reply tobasten

This is making me sad too. I can’t bear the thought that you don’t like yourself basten . You are a good mother because your son obviously cares about you enough to tell you that you shouldn’t put yourself down.

I’m very lucky that I’m a positive sort of person. The only time I struggled was when my first husband died 17 years ago. What picked me up and set me on the road to recovery was my wonderful friends. Talking to them endlessly lifted me up. So I can recommend talking to people you trust. They will want to help, I know they will. 🤗

That’s just how I am Basten.... once I start I can’t ... or don’t even want... to stop, so I have to not have the stuff in the house. It’s a good tip about the very dark chocolate.StillConcerned... I never binge on it... even 2 squares seems a lot and try melting it and drizzling on a plate of strawberries... delicious.... must confess though sometimes I can’t even wait while it melts 😱! Try taking it one day at a time .... if I can get to 22.00 and bed then I’ll have done 1 day , We can do it!! Take care 🌸

I have a history of eating waaaay too much. 10 doughnuts anyone? Low carb has helped, as has giving up the nonsense of eating fish & steamed vegetables for dinner. Now I eat whopping plates of spicy beef with cheese (and a load of veg) - it’s quite hard to pig out on chocolate when you are full of beef & cheese & cream. There’s always room for a snacident after a sparing low fat meal...

basten profile image
basten in reply to

Yes 10 doughnuts was me once !!

in reply tobasten

Legendary occasion when I was stuck in traffic on the way to a picnic. 3 bags of doughnuts were my contribution, so I ate 10 of them out of frustration. And had to toss the remainder out of the sunroof so I did not eat then. Other drivers thought I was insane...

Started afresh. Doc changed BP meds as the other wasnt controlling it. All due to weight gain. But a friend I hadnt seen since March and said to me....you look so much better!! That's cos my face has plumped a bit!! But 4 stone overweight isnt good but again when I was a size 14 last year people said I looked ill and drawn!!! Cant win

Hi basten... I hope you’ve had a better day today? We are always so hard on ourselves, if I had a bad day, then I used to have a bad week, then a month ... and so it went on. Now I try to start afresh and just think about 1 day at a time... if I look too far ahead I just want to give up! I have 28lbs to lose ... feels like a mountain ...Take care and let us know how you’re getting on. One thing I have found is that if I add lots of spices to my food I seem to enjoy it more and feel full which stops me craving sweet things afterwards 🌺🌻

I am quite active as have a horse and I have lost 10lb in 5 weeks I also aim to do 10000 steps on Fitbit whenever I can . I managed to put

on 1, 1/2 stone with binge / comfort eating ,alcohol along with too much alcohol at the start of lock down. But pleased to say I am feeling so much better with and about myself now that I have my life back on track. I am doing LCHF and no alcohol . Good luck with your journey 💐
