Hi, what did you have for your meals today and what are you planning for your evening meal? I think it would be better to focus on building them up rather than eating between meals. Snacks are not really a great idea.

I'm sorry you had bad news. I hope you can have a peaceful evening. :)

So I had cornflakes for breakfast, salad with boiled eggs for lunch and I'm having curry and rice for dinner, I just binged on chocolate and crisp earlier this afternoon so feeling really bad now!! Xx

Put that behind you now :) You were obviously thrown by your bad news.

Looking forward, I suggest you look at getting a little more protein and some healthy fats into your meals. Eggs - boiled, scrambled, however you like them, is a good start to the day. My guess is that you're avoiding sugar but this picture shows how cornflakes breaks down into sugar in your bloodstream - I don't think you'll be too happy phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

It may be worthwhile looking at what's in your cupboards and making sure that there's nothing that's just there to give you a sugar rush

Have you checked out a LCHF way of eating? Have eggs - boiled, fried, scrambled with tomatoes/mushrooms for breakfast. Use butter and full fat milk but ditch the cornflakes! I hope you had some lovely mayonnaise with that salad for lunch. And enjoy the curry but no rice. Eat that way and you won't have cravings for chocolate and crisps. If I have fancy a tasty little something, I have a lump of Brie or home-made clotted cream icecream (made with eggs, full fat milk, cream and clotted cream and sweetened with Xylitol - a natural sweetener made from the sap of birch trees!! and it doesn't affect your blood sugar level). Seriously, you must check out LCHF, ignore all the 'healthy eating guidelines' of the last 40 years and do a lot of reading to convince yourself that they are a load of poo!

Sorry to hear about the bad news Keelan and I hope you're ok. Well done though for posting here especially as something isn't going to plan.

Don't worry about the choc... it's a one off in a good week and my bet is, that if you were heading for a weight loss this week then nothing will have changed.

As for snack ideas, to me that seems pretty much down to you as an individual, the type of plan you're following and your personal favourites. For me I'm lchf and there were 4 separate occasions last week where I snacked outside of my planned menu and used peanuts which fit into my plan.

Good luck!

Well done for coming on here and asking for help. Nothing beats this forum for peer to peer support 😊

I agree with Bridgegirl, I prefer to eat my food as meals rather than snacks but if I really just then cheese or nuts are my go to food. I also find if 8meat enough at meals, including some good healthy fats, then I don’t crave the sweet things the same

Good luck

Thanks for all your replies... I think because I have been off work poorly and out of routine it didnt help but planning to be back on it as of my evening meal :)

in reply toKeelan1234

Oh being poorly is hard for good food choices. When you are better, could you have a more substantial breakfast - cornflakes will rush the carbs straight into your bloodstream so you are ready for another breakfast a bit later. Scrambled egg? Porridge with peanut butter? Greek yoghurt & berries?

Thanks for the options :) I run a breakfast club at the school I work so will make sure to take healthy nd easy breakfast with me xx

My go to snack is yogurt with chopped up fruit, honey and nuts. Yuuuum!!

Keelan1234 profile image
Keelan1234 in reply to

What type of nuts?? Sounds lovely xx

in reply toKeelan1234

My husband particularly likes walnuts, so that's what we have quite often...or almonds.

I find that what helps me is not having any junk in the house. I will raid the cupboards and the fridge when I'm bored and eat what I can get my hands on....so it helps if the only things I can get my hands on are 'healthier' food choices.

This doesn't mean I don't eat unhealthy foods!! I personally have found the times that weight loss haven't worked for me are the times I have made unhealthy food off limits!! I want them even more when I know can't have it and when I ate a bit, I would then binge and eat sooo much. So, I don't do that anymore! Although it's not in my house it's not off limits when I'm out for dinner or at someone's house :-)

You've gotta find what works for you ;-) we are all different and I've realised that weight loss is as much a mental battle as a physical one!!

Soon it'll all be second nature and you won't think about it as much. I changed the way I eat 2 years ago and can't imagine going back to the way I used to eat.

Good luck!! And enjoy being the healthiest version of yourself!

P.S. Sorry you had some bad news :-( I hope you're okay.

Hey, hope you are feeling better.

If the rubbish news was something that happens regularly, like your team lost - then, "pull yourself together man!". If it was genuine, uncommon news that knocked you back, then do what you need to cope, forgive yourself and get back on track when you are ready - which is clearly what you you have done.

I'm going to echo what other are saying more strongly: don't eat cornflakes. They were invented as deliberately dull food, so as not to excite the senses and thus - this is true - prevent masturbation. Then Kellogg's brother realised they would sell better with sugar, which was just the sort of thing that would excite someone and lead to masturbation. This is Seventh Day Adventist based, but I am not au fait with the nitty gritty.

So cornflakes are a Victorian nonsense fad food designed in the (vain) hope of preventing something that is not a vice anyway, and then "ruined" by adding sugar. No one should eat cornflakes.

in reply toSubtle_badger

Agreed! In fact cereal was one of the first things I changed when I started losing weight....I had a slight cereal addiction. I could eat 3 bowls in one day!! I kid you not.

I only eat cereal when I go to my parents house now....just to reminisce 😂

in reply toSubtle_badger

Also Subtle_badger , your reply interested me so I clicked on your profile and saw a post you put up in another group...it won't let me reply because I'm not a member of that group. But I say eat the damn cake this weekend 😂 maybe shouldn't be broadcasting this approach on a weight loss page....so I am going to run now ;-)

I am always interested in snack ideas especially as I really do not like the majority of fruit and veg (believe me I've tried!) My current go to sub 100 cal snack is.... An onion bahji!!! The Asda ones are only 70 cals :)

I have found that sweet cravings can sometimes (but not always!) be dealt with by having a cup of tea with a big teaspoon of honey in. Sorry about your bad news

One of the many things that I am learning on my healthy eating journey that is blowing my mind, is how wise choices yesterday lead to good choices today. And the same Is true for less wise choices - I am not going to say good or bad. It’s not moral thing here. It’s how our bodies work. I could get my head round how if I ate a scrappy sugary breakfast today, then my blood sugar would rocket about & I’d want more food usually rubbishy come elevenses.

The thing that seems to be true (i don’t fully understand the biology but it’s to do with insulin production) is that if I eat a bucket of rice, white toast, cake or other quick digest carbs, I then want to stuff my face for the next week! The moral of this is that every little wise choice you make away from the cornflakes, toast, cake etc, will make the next choice and the next easier.

Chocolate is comforting because it’s fatty as well as sweet. Our bodies need fat. If you like cheese, maybe eat some cheese instead when you need a food hug.

Right I’ll be quiet now.

Hello Keelan1234 Darling, so soz you've been hit by bad news. Depends what it is, as Subtle_badger suggests: a minor setback and you've got to resist those moments because otherwise that's a heck of a lot of compensatory chomping! However, if it was really bad news or a hard knock, that's tough and you have my entire sympathy. When one's emotions are rocked it's very hard not to Hit the Chocolate, as I know myself. However, as others wiser than I have said here, Forgive Yourself and Move On.

I'm a self-confessed chockyholic, so I've had to go for a snack replacement which is chewy and satisfying that also has a sweet element: that's chunks of cheddar cheese with slices of crunchy apple or a few dates. Yes, there's some sugar there in one form or another but you are eating good nutritious food, which is more than we can say for the Sugar-Loaded Carp sold to us nowadays as most commercial chocolate.

The trouble with many commercial breakfast cereals is they just don't sustain the tum for long and that can lead to mid-morning sugary snacks. If you can countenance the idea, try a bowl of large rolled oats in some milk for breakfast. Get the big stuff, not the small powdery product, which tends to descend into mush when you pour milk on it. Leave the submerged oats for about five minutes. Don't add sugar, they are sweet enough on their own. Perhaps add a sliced banana and a few blueberries if you feel that the sugar therein is not a Naughty Step Too Far. This is a really delicious breakfast of slow-burning carbs which will sustain you through the morning.

Lastly, when things are bad, please look after yourself especially well. This isn't selfishness but good plain common sense. You deserve comfort and sympathy when things go wrong, as well as anyone in your care, and if for some reason you are unable to share when Life is Pooey, then the Important Carer in your life is You. Thinking of yourself like this might help you avoid lurking in the under-stairs cupboard with a giant milk chocolate bar, because The Carer In You says, 'No, that's carp, Love, chuck it out. You can do so much better. What else can we give you that will comfort and sustain?'

Trust me, your Inner Voice will come up with an answer which will not conflict with your best intentions. We have the power to help ourselves, if we tune in to our Strong Inner Selves.

Hope that doesn't sound too Weird and Wonderful. Give it a try?

Have a good weekend. love Betty x
