Have you ever felt so knackeres and depressed that you can’t get your head round dieting. That’s where I am now.. I feel like going on a diet isn’t going to work .. my thyroids low and I’m just really depressed.. I’ve gained a stone and need to lose it.. how do you get out of this mind set.. I’m mostly housebound with fatigue and pain.. everything feels doom and gloom

Hi Zelda,

I'm so sorry to hear that you're feeling so awful. I see that you've posted on the TUK forum and that they've given you lots of advice. Really, until you can get yourself optimally medicated, any attempt to lose weight would probably be doomed to failure and would result in you feeling even worse.

I can only advise that you eat for your health, so avoid processed foods, sugar and most carbs and aim to improve your sense of well-being, rather than aim for weight loss.

Wishing you all the very best :)

Zelda123 that’s exactly what I’ve done - counting calories and exercising more were not part of my regime - just changing to a healthier lifestyle of avoiding sugar in all it’s various disguises (including white rice, bread, potatoes and pasta). Adding back in the healthy fats I’d been avoiding (butter, cream, cheese, avocados, salmon) means that I’ve also not had hunger pangs. Feeling healthier and losing weight seem to be the byproduct of the change. Take a look at a video called “The Skinny on Obesity” episode 3 for inspiration.

I have been eating avocados more regularly and felt guilty about if they were bad for me ?

Also what can you replace pasta rice and potatoes with as I love all those things ?

I’m a convert to avocados, they are fine on low carb high fat diet. I only do low carb, not “no” carb, and haven’t found it hard. I make my own cauliflower rice substitute, but M&S do a lovely one if you want to try it. Mash for fish pie etc I make with turnips mashed with cauliflower. Chilli I now serve by filling halved peppers and baking for 10 minutes with grated cheese over. Chips or roasties I make using turnips or celeriac instead of potatoes. Lunchtimes I have cheese and spinach omelette instead of a sandwich and I’m amazed that I haven’t missed my bread “fix” at all. Sorry, I didn’t often eaten pasta anyway so don’t know what you would do for that. Eating out I ask for extra portion of veg instead of chips, hasn’t been a problem and Chinese or Indian I just ignore the rice, eat only the tasty bit and I still get full up. Good luck!

Yeah all those things are great i need to find easier ways as I’m suffering from fatigue and can’t always cook 😩 il go on the M&S website and have a look at the cauliflower rice 😊

Hi Zelda,

I've just started this journey and it's really good to find someone I can identify with so soon. I also have low thyroid, high BP and had joint replacements and as a post war child was brought up to eat everything - lots of carbs! It's really hard to change habits of a lifetime. Do you find yourself saying - you won't have that piece of bread or chocolate or whatever carb - then find yourself somehow eating it? I do. I've found keeping an honest food diary helps but I'm not good at keeping it up, sliding after 2/3 weeks. It would be really good to share experiences and support through this diet change. 🎨

Last night I had no carbs for my tea, I had chicken, guacamole, eggs sausage and salad. I felt really full and I made a sugar free jelly with low fat yogurt for my afters as I love sweet stuff x if your in the uk hartleys jelly is just full of flavour and you feel naughty for having it.. but it’s sugar free x

If we slip it doesn’t matter each day can be difficult. How we feel in our mood aswell. Pain also interferes with our mind set. Your welcome to have a good moan if you like anytime.. 😊😊😊

Sounds good 😇. You have to enjoy food or we might as well just pop a food pill.

I picked up a few v early strawberries at a ridiculously low price - couldn't believe it. Small, so 12 was only 24 calories BUT they needed sugar (did they really?)so that added another 50 or so - oh and half a banana but that was good carbs and calories - apparently. Did feel v pleased tday - out for lunch with friend - she had crab salad with 4 roast potatoes and bread(never puts on any weight). I had crab open s/w with side salad. Offered chips with it but managed to say no!

Supper tonight turkey and veg soup made yesterday and I'm trying to substitute bread for dark ryvita. Butter is my downfall. Will try to spread it more thinly.

Aim to avoid the fridge chocolate tonight! Must get some jelly. Do you make it to the recipe or stronger? 🎨

I love pasta rice and spuds too, but I eat a lot less of them these days. Eating less of them, and more veg instead (yes including avocadoes!) is an easy way to improve your diet. You could try simply cooking them separately from everything else and serve your self less. I cook for my whole family so this is how I deal with everyone's different tastes!

Didn't ask earlier; how has your pain level been t'day? can/did you get out at all? Do you have a hobby that helps keep you occupied and your mind off snacks?

Hope the sun shines for you tmrrw wherever you are 🌻

Hi Zelda I am sure you know they can help you with the underactive thyroid so you know this is not going to be this bad for long. The loneliness if being stuck indoors is horrible, I know, it is the same for me. My way of dealing with that is to look for telephone friends. That way do not need to be alone when the being on your own gets too bad.
