Hello, Festivalgal, and welcome to the forum 😊
Finding a healthy eating plan that you can enjoy for life is the way to go, definitely not a diet. Many of us here start with the NHS 12 week plan which involves calorie counting. The important think to know is that you need to get a personalised calorie range as the 1400 figure you will see is generic and suits very few of us.

Welcome. I like to run. Walking is also excellent, others swim or take classes. Find something that you enjoy. Wishing you every success on you weight loss and health journey.

Eating meals that you’ve made from scratch using non-processed ingredients is the way to go for me.
As for exercise the best form is one that you like and will be able to keep up. Doing something you’re not keen on is likely to feel like a chore and you are unlikely to want to do it. I swim 4 days a week and go for a walk most days(sometimes it’s only for 30 minutes but it gets me out in the fresh air).
Good luck
Like Jubbly has said, only do exercise that you like. For me, apart from cycling, I'm not a fan of any specific exercises but I do like gardening and that helps keep me active. It doesn't strike me as exercise when I'm doing it.
Compared to managing your calorie intake, exercise plays a much smaller role in weight loss so focus on what you enjoy.
Agree with all above. Change the food you eat, that is eliminate the ones which give you empty calories and have little nutrition. Eat full fat rather than low fat. Enjoy cooking from scratch, then you know exactly what you are eating.
