Newbie - help!

Hi all,

Just joined and really hoping to nip my weight gain in the bud! I’ve got 3 stone to lose and diabetes is rife in my family so feel it’s really important to get to a healthy weight.

My problem: I run my own business as well as being freelance and I’m very passionate my job. As a result, everything else comes 2nd. I work unpredictable hours, very rarely home for dinner. Hubby works a 50 hour week and we have an epileptic dog to care for!

I often but prepackaged pasta salads etc as I never have time to prepare fresh food and I can’t bear a soggy lunchbox sandwich! If I get home at 10pm, it’s too late for dinner but I’m starving. So I often end up having tea and biscuits before bed - not good!

Help me!!

Hi and welcome, Soulster :)

There comes a time when we have to make the choice to put our health and well-being first, preferably before the onset of a medical problem. Forward planning is what makes this possible. If diabetes is your concern, then the last things you should be eating are pasta salads, sandwiches and biscuits.

Soups take minutes to prepare, especially if you buy ready prepared veggies and are a great lunch option. Slow cookers give you the option of throwing a heap of ingredients in a pot and leaving it to cook all day. If you have a freezer, then bulk cooking, or cooking too much at a meal, gives you the option to have home made ready meals, when you come home late and tired.

Have a look at this phcuk.org/wp-content/upload..., then join our weigh-in and daily diary. Both of which will keep you focused, supported and informed.

Welcome! I’m fairly new here too and have been using it for few weeks. It’s great support group.

I was listening to a podcast the other day that said change one meal at a time. Stick to eating healthy for that meal for few weeks, then change another meal, and etc.

Soon you’ll find yourself eating healthier without trying to do too much too soon.

With food, preparation will be key for you.

Welcome!

I’m also new! I’m a new mum so now my baby is number one above everything! I used to have a very busy stressful career but even then managed to make time for the gym and healthy eating.

If you have a healthy body and mind everything else runs and works so much better - work, relationships and you enjoy free time as you feel so much fresher with more energy!

Now I don’t want to go to the gym as want to be with my baby as much as I can especially for his first year but I’m making time to ensure I walk at least a few miles a day and taking him swimming so I get good exercise. Obviously I’m not working at the moment so I do have time to walk where as you are time limited!

Here are some tips which have helped and still help me and you can follow.

1- walk the dog and use that time to make a phone call to a friend or family member this makes it easier to get out the door if your feeling tired or not motivated! Or listen to music/ motivational podcast

2- drink 3-4 litres of water a day no excuses just pour a glass every 1-2 Hours and drink it! Known to help weight loss, skin, clear your mind. Best free tip anyone can do! After a week you start to feel more full by doing this naturally and will reduce calories this is a fact!

3- see exercise and healthy eating as part of routine like you have to brush your teeth and sleep, you HAVE TO FIT IN EXERCISE! When you see it like that and believe it - it won’t be a chore. This takes practice but you’ll get there.

4- as mentioned pre plan meals, have a morning smoothie with protein and fruit to feel you until lunchtime and spend time on a Sunday when you hopefully have a bit more time prepping and cooking for the week. This is one of my goals this week to prep and freeze more healthy meals! I’ve got the protein smoothie for breakfast down already!

You can and WILL do this! New month! New you! 👌🏻🙌🏻👊🏻

Hello,

I am new also. I have seen some great responses so far on this thread. I thought I would suggest a great book which addresses some of the issues you brought up. It is called No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness by Michelle Segar, PhD. It is common for people to even feel guilt for putting their own health first. The book outlines a much better way of thinking about this so that you can make healthy living practices a permanent fixture in your life. Here's a link to the book on Amazon if it helps:

You sound a bit like me! I am also a Newbie and the idea of calorie counting and weighing myself just seems like something else to fit in. I am building up to it though ... slowly. So, last week I started just trying to eat more fibre as suggested in the NHS plan and that definitely got me skipping pastries and biscuits and eating more fruit and vegetables and lunch (!) which is something I had been skipping. When I looked at my habits I realised I basically wasn't eating anything at all until dinner time - and then making up for it. I don't know if this helps at all but just to say you are not alone and we can all build up to better habits together. I have about 1.5 -2 stone to lose.
