Rheumatology specialist has advised I need to lose weight.

I have reduced my sweet and chocolate intake.

I walk everywhere and continue to put on weight. My portion size is average and try not to eat between meals. My partner eats all the time but doesn't put on an ounce of weight.

Apart from joining the gym which I can't afford

I also complete a daily diary

Hi and welcome, Matilda :)

Unless you actually weigh out a correct portion size, I can almost guarantee that your portions are probably too big. Don't compare yourself to your partner, because we all have vastly differing metabolisms and what's right for one, won't be right for another.

I'd like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out. If you just post a few words to introduce yourself and respond to others there, you'll soon break the ice. Here's the link

You'll find all the information you need to navigate the forum in the header, so please take the time to read it carefully.

Wishing you all the best :)

The difficulty here is what is an average portion?

I used to think that what I ate was pretty average and it was only when I started to weigh out the portions and log everything that I began to understand why I was overweight!

I started my weight loss journey at 14 stone - 5 and a half years ago. I was 49 years old and had been trying to lose weight all of my life since the age of 9. I am just 4ft 9" tall because of my disability.

I did this through calorie counting and logging/weighing all of my food.

Then re-gained some, lost some again and have now managed to more or less maintain for the past 6 months.

BUT... ideally I would love to drop another stone and maintain there.

My disability which makes exercise difficult, but the one thing that I realise very early on in my journey was that I was just eating FAR TOO MUCH! I was a short, middle aged, sedentary female and I was eating the same as 5ft 9" active man (my now husband!).

No wonder I was piling on the weight!

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring. I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - and you'll see that there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.

I thought my scales were wrong when I started to weigh portions! This was particularly true with carbs for me. Give it a try and see how big they are.

I will try and weigh my food. Should be OK at breakfast and lunch but my partner cooks the evening meal so difficult to measure this.

I also reduced size of plate as well.

hey that really works too! I realized how big my portions were when I got a smaller plate and was satisfied with a smaller portions.

My husband and I were the same. We were eating more than double the amount we were supposed to. I have a guide that says a portion of cheese should be the same as a matchbox; a portion of cereal should be the size of a tennis ball; meat the size of a pack of cards; potatoes the size of a computer mouse and fish the size of a cheque book. We still exceed that but it is a good visual guide. Good luck, you have come to the best forum.
