Hello, I'm just starting out on a journey of healthy living that I hope will restore some of my strength and activities after a serious illness a couple of years ago. I have struggled with my weight since childhood, and have never let it stop me living an active lifestyle, but getting older means that I am not coping as well and know that I have to deal with my weight to regain my enjoyment of the outdoors.

Hi there, I used to have the same problem all the time and even struggled losing weight. I found out on here that if you don't eat the calories it advises to lose weight on the NHS bmi calculator as you get two amounts you can eat between, you are not likely to. By not eating enough calories your body thinks you are starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you losing weight and sometimes means your putting weight on instead. The calorie amounts are a lot higher than you expect. Please don't make this same mistake. I did it for years and when I upped the calories I lost weight and have now lost over 2st. Good luck with your journey.
Thank-you. I found the app very useful and informative. I like the way it links to the various calculators. I used the bmi calorie calculator and have been using this figure. I'm amazed at how comfortable it is in terms of hunger to stick to, and although I'm only on day 5 have kept to it and am seeing the scales move down. For the first time in many years, and many diets, I feel in control of my eating and am optimistic I can make progress to this being my new normal lifestyle.
Alypar, you are never to old to start a more healthy lifestyle. I think that when you get older you are more aware of time passing. Being overweight and the health issues that can entail can seriously affect how you live your life. I understand the frustrations of getting older and feeling that life is passing you by. Being overweight can seriously curtail your interaction with the rest of humanity.
You have already taken the first step by deciding to do something about your health.
You only get one chance of life (unless you are a Buddhist! ) so go for it Alypar. I know it won't be easy but ultimately it will be worth it.
Thanks. I had my 55th birthday recently and certainly the last 5 or 6 years have been pretty tough for all sorts of reasons. I think that unless I REALLY make some lasting changes I won't be able to enjoy myself when I retire, and all my plans and hopes of travelling will not be possible. I have a lot to look forward to and am taking the first steps along the path to a happy and healthy second half of my fifties!
Hi Alypar, and Welcome!
You sound so motivated and enthusiastic that I can't help but think you'll get to where you're going. Good luck reaching your goals and I'm glad you're already starting to get there.
Hi Alypar, I am a Newbie too and wish you all the best on your journey. You sound really positive and I think things will be good for you. Looking forward to sharing with you along the way
