My advice is make sure you are doing it for you and not your family, if you feel under pressure it will make it harder. Take a look at the 12 week NHS plan. Plan in advance what you are going to eat and make healthy choices. What you eat is more important than the exercise you do. 80% of weight loss comes from food choice, 20% from exercise. Exercise will help you to tone up though.
What ever you do make sure it is sustainable and don't do it too quickly, it will only go back on.
keep posting on the forum for advice and support, we are a friendly lot. Good luck
Hello and welcome to the forum π Have a good look around and please ask if you have any questions π
Welcome to the forum!
Sorry to hear you've been taunted about your weight, but good for you to be using it as a spur to take action.
Going to the gym is good, not just to help weight loss but for health generally, but as people have said diet is very important too. If it's your first time at the gym don't worry they can be intimidating at first, but actually everyone's too busy working on themselves to notice others much. You should get an induction where someone shows you machines and how to use them, but also worth booking a 30 min or and hour session with one of their trainers to show you the ropes in more detail.
Diet is important - if you've been putting on weight then I'd recommend keeping a food diary for a week or so and finding out exactly how many calories you are eating and you can look at how to reduce that. What myself and many others on this forum are trying to do is adapt an healthy eating pattern that will last a lifetime, as no point in dieting to lose weight and then just putting it all back on when it ends
Hi Marv, as you can see from my badge I've done pretty well at losing weight and I look and feel fabulous and people stop and tell me so; my BMI is still 28.1. That's how I know that you look fabulous too! I'm sorry about the taunts and I know how much that must have hurt you but people who say such hurtful things often either aren't serious and think it's just harmless teasing or they design the comments to hit a nerve and, if you were the shape of a string bean, they'd just find some other way to have a dig. If you want to lead a healthier lifestyle or lose a few pounds because you want to for yourself, that is fine, but you look gorgeous just as you are so dress up, hold your head up high and put those thoughtless comments behind you. x
Hi Mar57
I have done the 12 week challenge. And its not easy. You will have your good day and bad.
I have Lost 3 stone. Try and find a exercise you like and slowly make changes in your diet.
Slowly make changes is the Key to success.
I have found something I like doing, Riding my Bike for exercise .But the hard thing is what you eat and how much. can you ask a friend to help and do it together. Jion the Ramblers or Local gym. Good look. You will do it.
Kind Regards Phil
Unless you enjoy the gym, my advice would be not to torture yourself with exercise regimes. The research all shows it's cutting down what you eat that counts. I hate the gym, hate swimming and have always been rubbish at sport. So I don't go there. For me what works is a calorie deficit over the week. Basically eating less, but using the 12 week NHS plan originally, I've got into good eating habits. Personally I do the 5:2. It doesn't suit everyone, but it suits me, and I have lost 9lb over the past three months, and am hoping to lose another 9lb. Already I need a belt for my jeans, and bras are on tightest hooks now, so it's working. Good luck, get started straight away and show those family members who's in control!
Thank you guys sooooo oops muchπ...this means a lot to me honestly. I totally belie9thst whoever taunted me they thought it was just harmless teasing ...but it kinda got to me. Cuz I always wanted to be thin but have always been like a cute chubby lol. I got really upset n started looking online for help n I found this forum. This morning I spoke to my hubby and he went not bought a scale for me and it turns out my weight is actually 4 kilos less than what it showed on scale last night π
So I feel a bit better than last night. And a bit more positive towards making healthy changes in my life
A BMI of 27 is the optimum BMI. A recent program on TV in which a highly respected cardiologist was consulted on this explained this as follows.
The level of 25 is an arbitrary value and for most people this is difficult to achieve. It is of great value to the slimming and diet food industry.
The value of 25 has no scientific basis. People with a BMI of 27 are in that group which are least likely statiscally to suffer a cardiac event.
Please remember that people can be overweight and healthy providing they are active and maintain a reasonable level of fitness for example taking regular walks will do the trick.
Do some research on links between the food and slimming industry and body mass index.
It is a pity that the NHS appears to have been conned into accepting the arbitrary and incorrect value of 25 for BMI.
Thanks Rogerrocket for this explanation. I really don't know much about health. Like I mentioned in my earlier post I always looked a bit chubbier than most of the other female members in the family. Since childhood I've had body image issues. So I just wanted to be skinny no matter what. After marriage my partner has been very supportive and taught me to love myself. I know I'm not overweight. I weigh 52 kg and my height is 147.5 cms that's bmi of 25.6. Not bad at all. But it's just all up in my head...π
Hi - i am fat no two words about it BMI 34.1 and a shy reserved person - but i went to the gym and bit the bullet and got moving. There are bigger people than me there and a lot thinner but that is what i am aiming for so good to see it works
Please remember those people who taunted you aren't the ones to loose weight for you must do it for you, and i feel sorry for you that this has happened.
remember most people are friendly including the staff - their job is to help you reach your fitness goal, be brave and i know you will be brilliant!
Chin up and good luck to you!
